Island Time, July 8-11: A Walk in the Park

The first full week of July is packed with things to do—or you could just sit back and relax. Either way, here are five activities to consider over the next few days and we’ll be back Thursday with the weekend’s events.

1. The Tisbury Street Fair returns, Monday, July 8, 6:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. in Vineyard Haven. 

First held in 1971 to commemorate the town’s 300th anniversary, the annual festival draws thousands of visitors who shop, snack and stroll their way along Main street, which is lined with vendors’ tables and restaurants serving portable food and drink.

2. Free live jazz on the lawn kicks off this year’s Sounds Like Summer concert series, Tuesday, July 9, 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at the Edgartown Public Library.

3. Island glass artist and metal sculptor Barney Zeitz opens his home studio,Wednesday, July 10 from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. at 67 Deer Hill road, Vineyard Haven.

See the magnificent stained glass windows this longtime Island artist is creating for a German former synagogue, now a church, his new Cornerstone Sculpture project for Government Center in Fall River, original drawings and other work.

4. The annual Sail Martha’s Vineyard Seafood Buffet and Auction takes place Thursday, July 11, from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. at Tisbury Wharf in Vineyard Haven.

Feast on the freshest local seafood, dance to live music on the waterfront and donate to support the nonprofit that has been teaching Martha’s Vineyard children to sail —for free—since 1994. This is one of the Island‘s most popular summer parties.

5.  Pianist David Crohan celebrates his 75th birthday with a concert at the Trinity Park Tabernacle in Oak Bluffs, Thursday, July 11 at 8 p.m.

David Crohan started playing piano at Martha’s Vineyard restaurants and nightclubs in the 1960s and became famous for his Tabernacle concerts mixing light classical, popular, patriotic and improvisational music.
