School’s Out, Fun’s In for February Vacation

Never fear, there’s plenty to do on the Island this week.

Martha’s Vineyard schools are on vacation this week, like many others in Massachusetts. The Island has plenty of options for students to spend that free time, as well as an all-ages community lunch served at no cost Monday through Friday at local libraries. Consult the Complete Martha’s Vineyard Calendar for the complete schedule of events; here are some highlights, all free unless a price is indicated:

• Drop-in Crafts at the Edgartown Public Library: Monday through Saturday, 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., with a different craft each day. Children under 9 must bring an adult.
• Drop-in Family & Tween/Teen Crafts at the West Tisbury Public Library: Monday through Friday, 10:30 a.m. to 4 p.m., with a different craft each day.
• Family & Teen movie screenings at the West Tisbury Public Library: Monday through Friday, 1 p.m., with popcorn.
• Crafts & Movies at the Vineyard Haven Public Library, Monday through Friday, 3 p.m.
• Open Mic Night for all ages at Island Music, Thursday,
• Amp Jam for young musicians, Thursday 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. and Sunday 2 p.m. to 6 p.m.
• The February Vacation Program at Felix Neck Wildlife Sanctuary is $65 per day for Mass Audubon members, $75 for non-members.
• The Island Grown Community Lunch Program serves a free lunch from 11:45 a.m. to 12:45 p.m. Monday through Friday.

  • Tuesday: Vineyard Haven Public Library
  • Wednesday: Edgartown Public Library
  • Thursday: Oak Bluffs Public Library
  • Friday: Edgartown Public Library
  • The menu for Monday through Wednesday is butternut squash & lentil soup, warm bread, veggie sticks with hummus, oat & date chocolate chip squares and hot lemon ginger honey tea. On Thursday and Friday, vegetable and bean chili will replace the soup.

Of course, there are also lots of things to do on the Vineyard that are more free-ranging:

• Walk ocean beaches, including several that are open to all comers only in the off-season—Lucy Vincent, Quansoo,  Squibnocket and Lambert’s Cove beaches are all spectacular, and all restricted to town residents from May to September.
• Explore the Island’s open lands using the TrailsMV mobile app, which leads you to and through more than 100 conservation properties around the Vineyard.
• Go bowling, or watch the action from the restaurant and bar, at the Barn Bowl & Bistro.
