A heady mix of celebration and remembrance, Memorial Day weekend is both the unofficial start to summer and a time to pause and honor those who’ve died in service to our country. On Monday, there will be both picnics and parades, flags at half-staff and doors thrown wide open, ferries coming and ferries going. Over the holiday weekend, artisan markets, film festivals, live music and new art shows will flip the Vineyard switch from spring to summer; it will feel – weather willing – like anything is possible as long as the sun shines.

Moviegoers have two festivals to choose from this weekend. From Thursday, May 25 to Sunday, May 28, the MV Film Society will present the Martha’s Vineyard Environmental Film Festival at the Film Center on Beach Road in Vineyard Haven. Each day is packed with screenings, speakers and the opportunity to view The Art of Conservation, an exhibit of environmental-themed art created by local high school students, on display in the lobby. At the Grange Hall in West Tisbury, Circuit Arts will be showing its “best of” picks from films seen at the Martha’s Vineyard Film Festival in March. Screenings will be held Friday, Saturday and Sunday at 7 p.m.
Head to the Portuguese American Club in Oak Bluffs on Saturday, May 27 for an artisans and crafts market from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Multiple artists from on- and off-Island will be showing and sharing their works.
Saturday and Sunday from 10 to 4 p.m. at the Grange Hall in West Tisbury, the Vineyard Artisans Festival kicks off its 28th year with the Vineyard Artisans Festival Memorial Day Weekend Show.
Then on Sunday, May 28, the first Oak Bluffs Open Market of the season will be held in Washington Park, just above the harbor. Head there between 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. for music, produce, flowers, antiques and art.
The Extraordinary Life of Dorothy West: From ‘the Kid’ to Miss West opens on Saturday, May 27 at the Martha’s Vineyard Museum. Dorothy West was a writer, editor, member of the Harlem Renaissance and a long time columnist for the Vineyard Gazette. Before the exhibit opens, a preview partywill take place Friday evening, May 26, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Preregistration required.
From 10:30 a.m. to noon on Sunday, May 28, farmer Lydia Fischer of The Garden Farm will teach the first of two classes on growing tomatoes. She’ll cover where to plant, diseases to look out for, favorite varieties and trellising methods. Talking Tomatoes will be at the Agricultural Hall in West Tisbury. Pre-registration encouraged.
Polly Hill Arboretum’s annual plant sale kicks off on Saturday, May 27 from 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.
