May Days

May Days

May 4, 2023
You can count on this: There will be something for everyone at this year’s Climate Action Fair, taking place on Sunday, May 7 from 12 to 4 p.m. at the Agricultural Hall in West Tisbury. Dozens of Island organizations have joined together to offer workshops, crafts, games, art exhibits, and energy consultations – plus food and entertainment, of course. You can bring your bike with you for a tune-up or bring a ripped pair of jeans for a mending lesson. Learn how to start that home compost pile or how to pack your own emergency kit. Visit the Buck a Shuck Oyster Bar or learn more about Island Eats’ reusable takeout bowls at Epicure MV’s Lebanese food stand. For more information, visit thevineyardway.org.
Plan the rest of your weekend with a look at our picks below, then be sure to check The Complete Martha’s Vineyard Calendar for a regularly updated list of all Island activities.
The Field Gallery in West Tisbury re-opens for the season on Friday, May 5! The contemporary art gallery and its delightful sculpture garden will be open Fridays through Mondays until expanding their hours for the summer season after Memorial Day. Keep an eye on the gallery’s website for updates to the exhibit schedule.
Take a lunch break at the Martha’s Vineyard Museum on Friday, May 5 starting at 12 p.m. Heidi Feldman, co-founder of Martha’s Vineyard Sea Salt, will share the story of starting the business, offer entrepreneurial tips and discuss sustainable food production. Pre-registration is required for Harvesting the Sea with Heidi Feldman — and it guarantees you’ll receive a light lunch from Little House Cafe that’s included in the ticket price.
Join the Martha’s Vineyard Land Bank for a guided tour of John Presbury Norton Farm (159 State Road) on Sunday, May 7, from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. Dress appropriately – walks happen rain or shine. Find more information on the property here.
On Sunday, May 7 — just in time for Mother’s Day — photographer Lynn Christoffers will offer free portrait sessions. Mothers, grandmothers and children are welcome to sit for Lynn from 1 to 3 p.m. at the West Tisbury Public Library.
She Speaks with the Ocean, environmental artist Marion Wilson’s exhibit at the Martha’s Vineyard Museum, closes this Sunday. Before it does, the museum is holding a series of events celebrating the wellbeing of water, the environment and how artistic expression upholds those concerns.
Events this weekend include a panel discussion An Evening on the Lagoon to be held at 5:30 p.m. on Friday, May 5, and two painting sessions held on Ms. Wilson’s houseboat studios on the Lagoon: watercolors on Saturday, May 6 at 3:30 p.m. and another about tonalism and shades of green that takes place on Sunday, May 7 at 3 p.m.
