Earth to Island

Earth to Island

April 20, 2023
Two female llamas arrived at Island Alpaca last weekend to take on their new duty as guard ladies to the alpacas. You could stop and say hello to 15-year-old Poppy and 1-year-old Spring this weekend, any day between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. Maybe that’s a side trip on your way back from Birding 101 or Earth Day Beach Clean-Up or on your way to the Earth Day Conservation Festivalat the Martha’s Vineyard Museum, all on Saturday (more below).
Or maybe you’d prefer a stroll around Edgartown: The Carnegie’s 60-minute guided historic walking tourshave started back up again on Thursdays and Fridays at 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. And in Oak Bluffs, Featherstone’s newest exhibit, Textures and Patterns, can be viewed every day from noon to 4 p.m.
For more ways to celebrate Earth Day and enjoy all the Island has to offer in the upcoming week, check The Complete Martha’s Vineyard Calendar for a regularly updated list of all Island activities.
Join the online Silent Auction to Help Fund Pride Weekend in Oak Bluffs, starting at 5 p.m. tonight, Thursday, April 20 and ending Sunday, April 23 at 5 p.m. Bid on donations ranging from jewelry and clothing to musical events, boating excursions and restaurant meals. The second annual Pride Weekend will happen June 9 to June 11 this year, with the parade on Saturday, June 10.
As PathwaysArts winds up its wintertime residency at Chilmark Tavern this month, they’ve scheduled the last screening in the Ocean Films series for tonight — Thursday, April 20. Can you identify which birds are tweeting outside your window when you wake up on these spring mornings? If not, the Martha’s Vineyard Bird Club’s Birding 101 outing on Saturday, April 22 will be perfect for you. Experienced birders join with novices to build birding skills at one of the Island’s most avian-populated sites: Sheriff’s Meadow Sanctuary in Edgartown. Register at mvbirdclub.org and be ready to meet at 8 a.m.
More than 20 Island beaches will get their biggest cleaning of the year on Saturday, April 22 as Vineyard Conservation Society celebrates Earth Day with its annual Beach Clean-Up from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Pick a favorite beach from VCS’s list and bring your own gloves and trash bags if you like (though VCS volunteers will have them on hand, too).
After the beach clean-up, head to the Martha’s Vineyard Museum in Vineyard Haven for the Earth Day Conservation Festival from 12 to 4 p.m. Museum admission will be free; there’ll be a community sing; and Great Pond Foundation, Polly Hill Arboretum and Fishermen’s Preservation Trust will give short presentations. This year’s lunch for beach cleanup volunteers will also be held at the museum.
