Spontaneous Spring

Spontaneous Spring

April 13, 2023
Every day now a restaurant or shop re-opens, a seasonal activity hops back on to the calendar, an outdoor gathering reconvenes. It seems we are truly shaking off winter-itis and loosening up for a more spontaneous approach to spring. Maybe we’ll catch a great film or go out for supper and live music. Or perhaps we’ll take a trail walk on Chappy or a class on herb gardening. We’re getting ready for school break next week, too. The kids can participate in a creative dance program at The Yard or join Spring Into Nature at Felix Neck Wildlife Sanctuary, where a field trip a day is planned!
Here’s to field trips for all of us (but no snow days or gym class). Be sure to check The Complete Martha’s Vineyard Calendar for a regularly updated list of all Island activities.
The Martha’s Vineyard Film Center will be busy over the next week. Special screenings include the film RRR, a smash hit from India that won an Academy Award for best original song, being shown on Friday, April 14 at 7 p.m.; the Met Opera Live broadcast of Der Rosenkavalier on Saturday, April 15 at 12 p.m.; and Richard Widmark’s star turn in the film noir classic Pickup on South Street, shown on Wednesday, April 19 at 7:30.
Don’t miss appetizers from Bombay MV being served before RRR and the complimentary pinot noir and chocolate before Pickup on South Street.
An exciting collaboration between Nashville singer-songwriter Rebecca Correia and Island musicians Kate Taylor, Isaac Taylor, Phil DaRosa and David Saw can be heard this Friday, April 14 from 7 to 9 p.m. at PathwaysArts in Chilmark. The ensemble of solo artists who are playing together as The Island Collective also performed last November at the famed Fox & Locke live music venue in Leiper’s Fork, Tennessee.
Grab a trowel and head to Lobsterville Beach in Aquinnah on Saturday, April 15 to help the Wampanoag Tribe of Gay Head (Aquinnah) plant 20,000 stems of beach grass in an annual effort to restore the dunes. The event begins at 9 a.m. and ends at 12 p.m., with coffee and breakfast provided by Quitsa Cuisine.
Join the Martha’s Vineyard Garden Club and speaker Heidi Schmidt for Awakening with Spring through your Herb Garden, an informative discussion happening on Tuesday, April 18 at 1 p.m. at the Wakeman Conservation Center in West Tisbury.
