After the Big Chill

After the Big Chill

February 9, 2023
The Snow Moon on Sunday was spectacular, with a full lunar halo around it caused by ice crystals in the clouds below. On Saturday, sea smoke hovered over Vineyard harbors in the sub-zero windchill and surf seemed almost to freeze in place. Nature was showing off.
But even with warmer temperatures and clearer skies this weekend, the show will still be thrilling. The two brightest planets — Venus (naturally) and Jupiter — are visible in the sky, starting at twilight. Valentine’s Day isn’t until Tuesday, but you could still do a little romantic stargazing or take your sweetheart on one of many guided nature walks planned for this weekend. Keep your eye out for certain birds; according to Gazette columnist Suzan Bellincampi, ornithomancy — the art and science of reading signs from birds — is a traditional means of making predictions, especially in matters of love.
If that all sounds a bit scary, there’s always the Super Bowl — and many more things to do on the Island this weekend. Read on and be sure to check out The Complete Martha’s Vineyard Calendar as well. And we’ll be back in your inbox with Island Time in two weeks; our biweekly winter schedule runs through March.
