There’s a quiet grace to winter on the Vineyard. Some days are wrapped in a cocoon of fog, others are clear and bracing. But all are blissfully quiet. In West Tisbury, you can hear the ferry horn blow when the boat steams out of Vineyard Haven harbor five miles away. Excepting the (occasionally cacophonous) company of crows or gulls, you can walk a trail or the shoreline in peace, with nary another human in shouting distance.
Of course if you’d rather have company while enjoying the natural beauty of the Island, opportunities await. Try taking a guided winter walk through Polly Hill Arboretum. Join the Vineyard Conservation Society for a Winter Walk of Pilot Hill Farm on Saturday, Jan. 14. Or do your winter exercise indoors: Take advantage of the public ice skating sessions at the ice arena on Sundays at 3 p.m. in January. Play pickleball. Take a dance class. In conjunction with its exhibit Unfreedom, the Martha’s Vineyard Museum will present a discussion titled Perspectives on Unfreedom: Finding the Forgotten People of Martha’s Vineyard. Guest curator Dan Elias, with museum staff, has taken a deep dive into the archives to discover more about the enslaved, indentured and incarcerated people in the exhibit. The presentation takes place at the museum on Saturday, Jan. 14 starting at 3 p.m.
DJ Ricky Prime celebrates his birthday by spinning tunes at two shows on Saturday, Jan. 14! He starts off the evening at the P.A. Club at 7:30 p.m. and then heads over to The Ritz Cafe to close out the night with a Birthday Bash at 9:30 p.m.
The MV Film Society welcomes seasonal Vineyarder Matt Heineman for a Q&A over Zoom after a screening of his Oscar-shortlisted documentary Retrograde. The event takes place at the Martha’s Vineyard Film Center in Vineyard Haven at 7:30 p.m on Sunday, Jan. 15.
Honor Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. on Monday, Jan. 17, by joining the Martha’s Vineyard branch of the NAACP. The organization will hold a virtual membership drive that afternoon from 1 to 3 p.m. National healthcare expert Dr. Ala Stanford will make a keynote speech as part of the event, which takes place via Zoom.
PathwaysARTS welcomes a special virtual guest to its Writing & Poetry series on Tuesday, Jan. 18. Former U.S. poet laureate Robert Pinsky will Zoom into a live audience in Chilmark, reading from his new book, Jersey Breaks, a memoir of life growing up at the Jersey Shore. The event begins at 7 p.m. at Chilmark Tavern.
