Handmade Holidays

December 15, 2022
Christmas in Edgartown was a resounding success. And now, after a blizzard of activity around the Island — not to mention a few actual snowflakes — it’s time to double-down on holiday shopping. Conveniently, three special holiday markets join the list of ongoing artisan fairs and pop-ups this weekend. (You can find them all at the end of this newsletter.)
Today (Thursday, Dec. 15) you can head over to the P.A. Club and Mo’s Lunch in Oak Bluffs for a Holiday Bazaar from 3 to 8 p.m. Grab a bite and a drink, then shop for locally-made gifts.
On Saturday, Dec. 17, the Vineyard Artisans Holiday Fair is happening at the Grange Hall in West Tisbury from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Also in West Tisbury on Saturday from 11 a.m to 5 p.m., Micah Thanhauser of Merry Farm Pottery is holding an Open Studio and Holiday Kiln Opening. Shop for pottery, tour the studio and enjoy pizza made by Stoney Hill Pizza.
Up in Chilmark, there’s a special Chilmark Holiday Flea from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Chilmark Community Center. Local artists, homemade goods, collectibles and centerpieces made of fresh greens will all be on the scene.
Naturally, there’s music and film and plenty more to do around the Island in the next few weeks. Read on for some of our picks and be sure to check The Complete Martha’s Vineyard Calendar for more events.
The Martha’s Vineyard Regional High School is holding its first-ever Winter JazzFest at the Performing Arts Center on Friday, Dec. 16, at 6:30 p.m. Well-known Island musicians, including Darby Patterson and the Jelly Roll Horns, Rose Guerin and Jeremy Berlin, will join students from the MV Big Band and the MV Jazz Combo. Tickets can be purchased at the door and all proceeds benefit the high school’s music programs.
Circuit Arts presents the documentary Butterfly Butterfly, filmmaker Len Morris’s examination of child labor and salute to the resilience of children around the world. He and producer Petra Lent will participate in a discussion after the screening to be held at 7 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 16 at the Grange Hall in West Tisbury.
Author Holly Nadler has tales to tell about life after giving up her year-round apartment on the Island and she shares many of them in her new book, The Hobo Diaries: Down and Out on Martha’s Vineyard. She’ll be signing copies of the book at Bunch of Grapes Bookstore in Vineyard Haven on Saturday, Dec. 17 from 4 to 6 p.m.
Indie rock bands from the western part of our state will play The Ritz Cafe in Oak Bluffs on Saturday, Dec. 17 starting at 8 p.m. Western Mass Takeover features Prune (heard at LadyFest in October), Lucy, Sun Paradise and Ruby Lou.
