Making That List, Island-Style

Making That List, Island-Style

November 23, 2022
Happy Thanksgiving! The glorious long weekend stretches ahead – after you recover from the big meal and indulge in some serious couch time. You might want to stay in that groove and simply do nothing on Friday. But the Vineyard has other plans for you: shopping, art shows, music, and a multi-event festival in Oak Bluffs to kick off the holiday season.
Light Up Oak Bluffs will begin on Friday, Nov. 25 and culminate on Saturday, Nov. 26 at 6:30 p.m. when the town’s Christmas tree in Healey Square will be lit simultaneously with the lights in Ocean Park. In between, you can enjoy Reindeer Games in Ocean Park, a Stumbling Santa Run/Jog, photos with Santa, horse-drawn carriage rides, caroling and hot chocolate.
But the fun doesn’t stop there. This is the weekend for artist pop-ups (see the box below) and the opening of more holiday markets (see the list at the end of this newsletter). Make your picks from our highlights, then fill in with events and activities listed on The Complete Martha’s Vineyard Calendar.
Celebrate fall, the holiday season and the Island’s beauty at Felix Neck’s 41st Annual Fall Festivalon Friday, November 25. Vineyard Gazette Bird News columnist Robert Culbert starts the day off with a Bird Walk at 9 a.m. and then full festival activities — including nature crafts, squash bowling, music and s’mores — happen from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
The Chilmark Potluck Jam returns to the Chilmark Community Center on Saturday, Nov. 26. From 5 to 10 p.m., you can hear music played by Jemima James, Isaac Taylor, Brad Tucker, Lexi Roth and many others. Bring a dish to share and enjoy!
PathwaysARTS will screen three documentaries at Chilmark Tavern on Friday, Nov. 25 at 7 p.m. The series, called Ocean Films, is free and includes two short films and one 52-minute feature exploring ocean ecosystems around the world, from the Hudson River to the African seaforest to the deep seas of the Pacific.
If you love hearing music at the Portuguese-American Club, you’ll want to keep it going through a fundraiser to help build a new stage and install a new audio system. Come out to the P.A. Club on Friday, Nov. 25 at 5 p.m. for a very Vineyard line-up including the Dock Dance Band, Kate Taylor, Philly D and the Jelly Roll Horns and the Jaywalkers.
This weekend will be a feast for art lovers. In addition to ongoing exhibits at local galleries and the Martha’s Vineyard Museum – plus the annual Thanksgiving weekend version of the Vineyard Artisans festival — there are some notable pop-up events and open studios as well.
Ronni Simon will be re-opening the Simon Gallery in Chilmark Friday, Nov. 25 through Sunday, Nov. 27, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., and also on days throughout December.
On Saturday, Nov. 26, Candy Shweder will hold an open studio at Up-Island Pottery, showing and selling her tableware from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Joan LeLacheur will show and sell her shell jewelry and mosaic tiles during her open studio hours, 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., in Aquinnah on Friday, Nov. 25 and Saturday, Nov. 26.
Paintings, graphite drawings and mixed media works are available at the open studio and sale held by Wendy Weldon and James Langlois Friday, Nov. 25 through Sunday, Nov. 27. Call ahead of time to receive location information.
