Holiday Guide

Holiday Guide

November 17, 2022
It’s hard to believe that Thanksgiving is next week and that holiday fairs and markets are already popping up across the Island. For help with Thanksgiving, check out Thanksgiving Central at cookthevineyard.com, visit What’s Open on Martha’s Vineyard for take-out and dine-in sources, and consider a cooking class (see below).
For a complete list of holiday markets – those that are open and those that will be soon – scroll to the end of this newsletter.
For opportunities to hear music, see films, and to just plain relax in the next few days, read on. And remember you can find all upcoming events on The Complete Martha’s Vineyard Calendar.
Whew! You’re all set now. At least for the next week or so. Don’t forget to enjoy the holiday season – light a fire, make that hot cocoa (or espresso martini) and treat yourself to the best possible self-care.
At 4 p.m. this afternoon (Thursday, Nov. 17) at the West Tisbury Public Library, pianist and innovator David Stanwood will play a concert titled Reflections from the Piano, drawing on autumn light and the reflections of water as his inspiration. David will share some of his nature photographs that accompany the music.
Wicked Good Musical Revue, a favorite off-season event that brightens winter spirits, returns to the Martha’s Vineyard Playhouse in Vineyard Haven Friday, Nov. 18 through Sunday, Nov. 20. David Behnke is the musical director, with Peter Boak and Molly Sturges accompanying Island performers.
Dr. Martha Eddy, an author, speaker and leader in somatic studies, will lead a workshop exploring healthy responses to stress and trauma. Unfolding Energies in the Lower Body takes place at Yoga Barn on Saturday, Nov. 19 at 12:15 p.m.
On Saturday, Nov. 19 at 7 p.m., Circuit Arts celebrates the Island’s filmmakers by screening three films and one film in process made by Tom Ellis, James Graham, dream Hampton, and Liz Witham and Ken Wentworth. The filmmakers will speak afterwards. Vineyard Shorts will take place at the Grange Hall in West Tisbury.
If you’re looking for ideas on how to make both tasty and healthy Thanksgiving side dishes, sign up for chef Jan Buhrman’s online class, taking place via zoom at 5 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 20. Ms. Buhrman will be making crustless pie, Brussels sprouts and cranberry sauce. The class is free, but pre-registration is required.
Or sign up for a two-part holiday pie-baking workshop with Christian Walkis at Slough Farm this weekend, Saturday, Nov. 19, 1 to 3 p.m., and Sunday, Nov. 20, 1 to 3 p.m. Pre-registration required.
If company is in town for the holiday and you want them to experience hometown culture, few bands say Martha’s Vineyard more than Johnny Hoy and the Bluefish. There are two chances to hear the band play on-Island in the upcoming week: Friday, Nov. 18 at the P.A. Club in Oak Bluffs at 8 p.m. and Wednesday, Nov. 23 at The Ritz Cafe at 7:30 p.m.
