Time to Fall Back

The calendar turned a page earlier this week, and on Sunday morning the clocks will fall back an hour just after midnight.The earlier sunrise may be good news for farmers, students and their teachers, morning walkers and yoga practitioners taking the West Tisbury Library’s online Chair Yoga class with YogiJay. 

An extra hour of Sunday morning sleep might also be welcomed by anyone who was out late on Saturday night at the Barn Raisers Ball or dancing to music spun by DJ Ricky Prime at The Ritz Cafe. Or for those who’d like to snag an early morning appointment at the Vaccination Bus. (Be sure to make your appointment in advance.) You could always use the time to prepare for Donald Nitchie’s online poetry class sponsored by the Chilmark Library on Wednesday afternoons.

On Friday, Nov. 4, Juniper in Edgartown kicks off a new Artist and Artisan Pop-Up series. Enjoy live music from 5 to 7 p.m. while you check out paintings by Darcie Lee Hanaway and Alena Grady as well as woodwork crafted by Brad Tucker and Liz Ragone of Rafter Revivers.

Mobile Monastery Chautauqua Tour will visit Native Earth Teaching Farm in Chilmark on Saturday, Nov. 5 to lead A Day of Mindfulness. Go inward with guided sound and interactive meditations and movement flow. The afternoon-long event will be held from 1 to 5:30 p.m.

Johnny Hoy and the Bluefish played the very first Barn Raisers Ball in 1994. They’ll again be rockin’ the Agricultural Hall as this Island tradition continues on Saturday, Nov. 5. Head to West Tisbury with your dancing shoes and a potluck dessert to share for this free evening of socializing with friends and neighbors under the timber frames and in the field. This year’s event takes place from 7 to 10 p.m.

Nov. 5 won’t be just one more Saturday night when the Martha’s Vineyard Film Society joins movie theaters around the country for the Grateful Dead Meet Up at the Movies. This screening of a Dead concert from Copenhagen in 1972 has been fully restored and audio mixed from master tapes. Truck down to the Film Center on Beach Road in Vineyard Haven by the 7:30 p.m. start time. There’ll be dancing in the streets.

Baritone David Behnke and pianist David Rhoderick will fill the First Congregational Church in West Tisbury with the sound of German art songs, known as lieder, on Sunday, Nov. 6. Works by Beethoven, Strauss and Schumann will be performed, many of which are based on poems inspired by nature. The concert, presented by the Martha’s Vineyard Chamber Music Society, takes place from 3 to 4:15 p.m.

Explore fall trees, marshy shores and a great pond during a natural history walk at the Sepiessa Point Reservation in West Tisbury on Sunday, Nov. 6. Staff from the Martha’s Vineyard Land Bank will guide the way starting at 1 p.m. and lasting for approximately two hours. It will be held rain or shine.
