October is Crushing It!

October 20, 2022
Heard on the street: “October is crushing it!” We couldn’t agree more. In our humble opinion, October is the loveliest month on the Vineyard. And the third week in October? Particularly sweet. Sidewalks are carpeted with colorful leaves, farmstands are overflowing with pumpkins and the afternoon light filtering through oaks and pines is mesmerizing.
To celebrate all things October, you need go no further than the Agricultural Hall in West Tisbury this weekend. On Saturday, Oct. 22, the Harvest Festival has something for everyone: live musicthe Local Wild Food Challenge, pumpkin carving, hayrides, a medieval horse archery tournament to save the Harvest Unicorn, the All-Island Draft Horse Show, seed saving, and more! The festival runs from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. and the Farmers Market will happen alongside it from 9 a.m. to noon.
Of course there are plenty of other captivating October events going on this week. We’ve got suggestions for your schedule below and as always, you can check The Complete Martha’s Vineyard Calendar for a full listing of upcoming Island activities.
The theme of Featherstone’s Fall Group Exhibit is transformation and observation. Twenty Vineyard artists use a palette of greys, blacks and whites, as well as spots of color, to express emotional landscapes as the season changes. View the exhibit daily from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. through Nov. 4.
Friday, Oct. 21 marks the return of performances of Rizing, Abby Bender and Jesse Jason’s spooky, site-specific artwork of storytelling and movement. This immersive experience takes place at a private home in Oak Bluffs, so participation is limited and advance tickets are required. Performances are held at multiple times on weekend nights, plus Halloween, through Nov. 2.
Take in the Fall Color Celebration at Polly Hill Arboretum on Saturday, Oct. 22. Enjoy the bright colors of the fall leaves and participate in crafts, take a trail tour, enjoy treats and take home a plant or two. This free event takes place from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Looking to the off-season as a time for self care? The Aquinnah Public Library can help by introducing you to the practice and benefits of ayurvedic living. On Saturday, Oct. 22, Sonya Josephson will lead a Transitioning into Fall with Ayurveda workshop starting at 3 p.m.
Rose Guerin and John Stanwood continue their Wednesday evening residency at the Portuguese American Club in Oak Bluffs. Join them there for some midweek music on Wednesday, Oct. 26 at 5 p.m.
