And We’re Off!

And We’re Off!

August 4, 2022
During the month of August on the Vineyard, the biggest challenge is finding a balance between activity and leisure. It’s a good problem to have, for sure, but with so much going on, it can be hard to make decisions. Evening swim or morning yogaEat out or cook at home? Watch a film or hear live music? Take in an art show or go for a guided tour? Go to a book talk or hear a distinguished speaker? You don’t want to miss anything, but at the same time, banking beach hours while the sun shines is essential for well-being. The best solution is to make a plan, but not be afraid to break it if a spontaneous opportunity arises – which it will. This is August on the Vineyard, after all, and anything can happen!
To craft your plan, take a look at some of the week’s highlights below; and find a full list of events on The Complete Martha’s Vineyard Calendar.
The Martha’s Vineyard African American Film Festival kicks off its 20th anniversary on Friday, August 5. Screenings of feature and short films, documentaries and television shows, along with special speaking and panel events, continue through August 13.
A highlight of Friday night is the documentary The Descendent, about the search for and historic discovery of The Clotilda, the last known ship to arrive in the United States, illegally carrying enslaved Africans. It will screen at the Martha’s Vineyard Performing Arts Center at 8 p.m. and will be followed by a conversation with director/producer Margaret Brown.
The Moth Mainstage returns to Martha’s Vineyard on Saturday, August 6 for an evening of true stories told live without notes. This year’s theme is holding on and letting go. Local storytellers are Brooke Adams, Paula Peters, Jacoby Cochran, Theodore M. Shaw and Danyel Smith. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. and the event begins at 7:30. Buy tickets here.
Edgartown’s North Water street will be a lively spot on Sunday, August 7. The Eisenhauer Gallery will be showing new works by Oak Bluffs-based artist and educator Janice Frame, who finds inspiration in connecting African and Western cultures. The gallery opens at 10 a.m. Starting at 6 p.m., the design duo Ada Chic will visit the gallery to talk about the work they do with women in Ghana to handcraft leather goods. Also at 6, jazz saxophonist Romel Simms will be playing in the courtyard outside Vineyard Square Hotel.
Reverend Otis Moss III, Senior Pastor of Trinity United Church of Christ in Chicago, Ill., returns to Union Chapel for his popular annual sermon this Sunday, August 7 at 10 a.m. Arrive early (doors open at 9 a.m.) as the chapel fills to capacity for this event.
Plan ahead if you want to attend the Edgartown seaside garden tour held by the Martha’s Vineyard Garden Club on Thursday, August 11. It takes place at a private residence and features an historic garden with rare plants and seaside views. Tickets should be purchased in advance for this Garden Club fundraiser. Non-members must be booked by a Garden Club member.
