Savor the Moment – August is Almost Here!

July 28, 2022

Savor the moment. On the Vineyard, it’s a phrase most often associated with the late Oak Bluffs activist and arts educator Della Hardman, and as the calendar turns swiftly from glorious July to busy August it is advice worth taking. Ride your bike in the state forest, take the kids for a pony ride at Misty Meadows Equine Learning Center on Saturday morning, forage for wild blueberries in one of many Land Bank properties, then cool off with an ocean swim. You can help celebrate Della Hardman Day at Ocean Park in Oak Bluffs at 4 p.m. on Saturday. And be sure to check The Complete Martha’s Vineyard Calendar often to take advantage of all the great activities the Island has to offer.

Danny Simmons brings Def Poetry performers Black Ice, Elisabet Velasquez, Kayo Charles and others to the Performing Arts Center on Saturday at 6:30 p.m. Poetry on the Vineyard: A Def Poetry Reunion will benefit the Mariposa Museum, the August Wilson Cultural Center and Rush Philanthropic Arts Foundation.
On Saturday at 7 p.m. at the Tabernacle, past and current members of the Vineyard Sound will gather for 30th reunion songfest. The a capella boys of summer have been a staple of the Vineyard music scene since 1992.
Two beloved Island institutions join forces this weekend as the Martha’s Vineyard Museum opens a new exhibit celebrating the 50th anniversary of The Yard. Let’s Dance! will be on view through Oct. 21 but this Saturday night, you can celebrate at a MVM Nightlife event featuring dancing and drinks at 5:30 p.m.
At the annual All-Island Art Show on August 1, you can show and sell your art, and win prizes, or admire works created by hundreds of Islanders. Registration begins at 8:30 a.m. and the art will be on view from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. It’s all at the Tabernacle in Oak Bluffs.
The 11th Annual Martha’s Vineyard Comedy Festival begins on Monday, August 1 and continues through August 19 at the Strand Theatre in Oak Bluffs. This year’s line-up features Damon Williams, Alonzo Bodden, Brandi Denise and more.
MV Fisherman’s Preservation Trust invites you to Meet the Fleet at Menemsha harbor on Thursday, August 4 from 3 to 7 p.m. Coast Guard rescue helicopter demos, boat tours, shucking competitions and more are on the agenda. Free parking and a shuttle are available off-site.
Join Cook the Vineyard and the Vineyard Gazette on Tuesday, Aug. 2 at Atria in Edgartown for Beyond Recipes: How Stories Shape the New Cookbooks, a talk featuring Bryant Terry, author of Black Food and Vegetable Kingdom, and Nicole A. Taylor, author of Watermelon & Red Birds: A Cookbook for Juneteenth and Black Celebrations, and moderated by Dawn Davis, Bon Appetit and Epicurious editor-in-chief. The event begins at 11:30 a.m. and includes a light lunch. Purchase tickets here.
