The Golden Hour: Island Time, March 31

The Golden Hour: Island Time, March 31

March 31, 2022

Evenings on the Island are beautiful right now. Twilight stretches past dinner and the rosy shades of sunset filter through curtains of low hanging clouds and bare-branched oaks to arrive in our backyards with fanfare. Mornings are filled with birdsong (and the occasional woodpecker) and afternoons with the percussion of wind chimes. And this weekend, the air will be filled with a different kind of song – the voices of Martha’s Vineyard Regional High School students performing Les Miserables along with a 16-piece orchestra. Once you’ve seen that, you might want to participate in a community sing at Slough Farm or go hear Rose Guerin sing at the Ritz on Saturday night. Or tune in to the The Complete Martha’s Vineyard Calendar for all kinds of events happening in the coming week. Below are a few of our picks.

On Friday, April 1 from noon to 1 p.m., bring a picnic lunch from home and enjoy it at the Martha’s Vineyard Museum while learning about local food history. Listen to a special presentation about Wampanoag foodways and food culture from guest speaker Juli Vanderhoop, owner of Orange Peel Bakery. Register here.
Vineyard Confections will hide handmade six-inch eggs containing samples of their candies all over the Island on Saturday, April 2 and Sunday, April 3. For details and event clues, go to @vineyardconfections on Instagram or Facebook, or email your cell number to [email protected] by Friday, April 1 at 5 p.m. to be added to the text list for clues.
On Sunday, April 3 join the Land Bank staff on a guided natural history walk of Quansoo Preserve. Meet at the Quansoo Farm trailhead at 1 p.m. The walk will go through about 3 p.m. and will happen rain or shine.
Students from the Martha’s Vineyard Regional High School’s performing arts department, along with a 16-piece orchestra, will performthe musical adaptation of Victor Hugo’s Les Miserables on March 31, April 1 and April 2 at 7 p.m., and on April 3 at 2 p.m. at the Performing Arts Center in Oak Bluffs. Get your tickets and watch a trailer here. Read a preview here.
From noon to 4 p.m. on Saturday, April 2 drop by the Cooke House & Legacy Gardens at 51 School street in Edgartown to watch the garden emerge from hibernation, chat about historical horticulture and enjoy a garden-inspired take-home craft.
Maybe after you see Les Miserables you’ll be inspired to take an acting class at the Martha’s Vineyard Playhouse. Acting 101 for Adults is a four-week series beginning today (Thursday, March 31) at 6 p.m. Or you could take an Adult Community Dance Class Saturdays at 10:30 a.m. at the West Tisbury Library or sign up for a Collage Workshop on Sunday, April 3 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Featherstone. Check out all the classes available on Martha’s Vineyard this week.
