Good Tidings: Island Time, December 23

December 23, 2021
If your stockings are hung by the chimney with care, you’re good to go. If you’re like us and still have a bit of last-minute shopping to do, we’ve got some suggestions below. Once you get that all wrapped up, find a way to enjoy the peace of the weekend by participating in one of the many Christmas services around the Island or by listening to a free virtual concert from the Martha’s Vineyard Chamber Music Society. Don’t forget to take a drive around the Island to see all the light displays, including the Gatchell Christmas Houseand Crossland’s Oak Bluffs Christmas Display. That will get you in the spirit!
Next week will undoubtedly be quiet, but New Year’s weekend comes fast upon it, so be sure to check The Complete Martha’s Vineyard Calendar for updates, and we’ll be back in your inbox next Thursday.
Good news! Two holiday markets are still open for picking up those stocking stuffers and any other last-minute presents. Island Made Holiday Shopping at Heather Gardens in West Tisbury andWorld Market Holiday Pop-Up Shop at the Capawock Theatre in Vineyard Haven are both on today and tomorrow from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Small, affordable artworks from Vineyard artisans are on display (and on sale) through tomorrow at the Louisa Gould Gallery. The 15th annual Holiday Small Wonders Show features work in a variety of styles and mediums. The gallery is open from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.
While you’re poking around Vineyard Haven today or next week (Tuesday, Thursday or Saturday), be sure to stop in the Martha’s Vineyard Playhouse for a one-of-a-kind art show — in fact the first sole exhibition of work by lifelong Vineyard painter Norma Bridwell. The collection, entitled My Horizons, will also be up through the end of January, but those little red dots are popping up fast next to her paintings.
If part of your holiday tradition is catching a great movie, you might want to take advantage of your last chance to see Academy Award-winning writer and director Aaron Sorkin’s Being the Ricardos at the Martha’s Vineyard Film Center, today at 4 p.m. The film centers on one tension-filled week in the personal and professional life of Lucille Ball (played by Nicole Kidman) and Desi Arnaz (played by Javier Bardem). Watch the trailer here.
Spider-Man: No Way Home is playing at 3:30 p.m. and 6:45 p.m. today at The Edgartown Cinemas. Find the complete list of Island movies here.
