Sum- Sum- Summertime: Island Time, July 8

July 8, 2021

We wouldn’t blame you if all you hoped for this weekend was some solid porch time, a cold glass of lemonade, and a good chat. But just in case you get restless, it is high summer on the Vineyard and that means markets, classes, events, and entertainment are filling up the calendar. See for yourself by visiting The Complete Martha’s Vineyard Calendar or check out some of our top picks for the weekend and the week ahead below.

Do you love picking and arranging flowers? Then Slough Farm‘s new weekly Cut Flower Club is just for you! Starting Tuesday, July 13 and running through Tuesday, August 17 spend an hour in the garden to harvest and then arrange the fresh flowers into bouquets to take home and to be donated through MV Hospice and Palliative Care. There are two time slots: 4 p.m. and 5 p.m. Email [email protected]to register.
The Comedy Lounge – located inside The Barn, Bowl & Bistro in Oak Bluffs – is back! On Friday, July 9 from 9 to 11 p.m., enjoy some stand-up comedy during the LOL Comedy Roadshow from some of the nation’s top touring comedians: Pamela Galvez, Don Zollo and Tom Briscoe.
The Fluke for Luke fishing tournament – held annually to help raise funds for Jacob and Sam Gurney’s scholarship fund and to celebrate the life of their dad, Luke Gurney – takes place this weekend. Fishermen and women can register at either Coop’s Bait & Tackle, Dick’s Bait & Tackle or Larry’s Tackle Shop.
Weigh-in will be at the Portuguese-American Club in Oak Bluffs from 4 to 6 p.m. on Saturday, July 10 and 2 to 4 p.m. on Sunday, July 11. An awards ceremony will take place after the final weigh-in.
Neo-classical trio Thistle – led by composer, singer and harpist Thistle Jemison – is playing an outdoor concertat the Chilmark Community Center on Saturday, July 10 starting at 7 p.m. The trio – which also features Nick Jozwiak and Al Cerulo – will perform original music inspired by the writings of Victorian poets Andersen and Poe. Tickets can be purchased in advance or on the day-of.
Teri Culletto is know as the Vineyard Baker, and her stunning works of art in bread form are magical. Ever wanted to know how she does it? Now is your chance to learn from her during a Homemade Focaccia Bread (& Art) class on Wednesday, July 14 from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the FARM Institute in Katama. All participants will take home a feshly made loaf of bread with a beautiful design of their own creation.
Island author, historian and proud Oak Bluffs citizen Skip Finley discusses his latest book Whaling Captains of Color: New England’s First Meritocracy in the garden at Narragansett House in Oak Bluffs. Saturday, July 10 from 3 to 5 p.m.
Greetings!
If this week’s dramatic weather has you feeling out of sorts, why not stay home, stay dry, and learn something new? The Oak Bluffs library is hosting Chaya Milchtein of Mechanic Shop Femme for “The Why’s & When’s of Car Maintenance” Thursday at 7 p.m.; it’s always a good time to be prepared!
And if you’ve ever been curious about writing for children or young adults, check out Writing For Young People, a virtual offering hosted by the Chilmark library and Tracy Thorpe. Saturday at 2 p.m.
But let’s think positive and plan for breaks in the clouds. I’m especially keeping fingers crossed for Friday afternoon, when Althea Designs hosts a Live Art Friday & Artist Pop-Up.
Vendors include Gabrielle Stratmann, Frock, Plant Post, Elysha Joy Metals, Island Spray MV, Swell Affair, Ray’s Vintage Cameras and other local artisans. Friday, 2 to 7 pm.
And if strange weather patterns have you feeling restless, why not shift focus and lend a helping hand? Felix Neck is looking for volunteers on Thursdays. And gentlemen, stand in solidarity with survivors of domestic and sexual violence by joining CONNECT to End Violence for the 10th annual Seawall Stand. Saturday, 10 a.m. to 1 pm.
Rain or shine, be sure to get to Dock Street Coffee Shop in Edgartown some Thursday when Cinnamon Starship does her weekly pop ups. (This week’s special is the Pizza Burger.) Thursday, 5:30 p.m.
Live music below! The bands play on…
