Make It a Beach Day: Island Time, April 15

April 15, 2021
Hay fields are greening up. Lambs are out of the barn getting some fresh air with their mamas. Landscapers and stonemasons, window washers and window-box makers — everybody’s gearing up. So ready or not, here we go, buzzing along through April straight ahead to May. One day, before you know it, we’ll wake up to a summer dawn — for real.
Whether you join in the beach cleanup for Earth Day this weekend or concentrate on your own yard cleanup, we hope you’ll also enjoy a movie, a sea shanty or a bit of trivia. Remember Monday is Patriot’s Day, and the kiddos will be on school vacation next week. (Good news about mini-golf below!)
Here’s the lineup of our picks, and as always, check out The Complete Martha’s Vineyard Calendar for all events. And by the way, our Oyster columnist is on baby watch! Check out her note below.
Now’s your chance to see the much-talked-about Michelle Pfeiffer film French Exit, playing at the Martha’s Vineyard Film Center in Vineyard Haven Friday and Sunday at 4 p.m. and Saturday at 7:30 p.m.
Celebrate Earth Day early by lending a hand with the Vineyard Conservation Society’s 29th annual beach cleanup event, Saturday from 10 a.m. to noon at all your favorite beaches.
Island folksinger Mark Alan Lovewell performs another one of his popular online concerts, featuring sea chanteys, stories and maritime lore, Sunday at 8 p.m.
Join the Martha’s Vineyard Playhouse’s Jenny Allen and Mona Hennessy online Wednesday at 5 p.m. for a bout of show biz trivia, with real-world prizes — for both highest and lowest scores — delivered to the winners’ doors afterward.
The Martha’s Vineyard Museum celebrates long-lasting love affairs in an exhibition called We Two, featuring portraits of Martha’s Vineyard couples from whaling days to recent years. The exhibit in the Morse Hallway runs through August 1.
The museum is open Tuesday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Hello!
A quick note to let you all know that I’ll be taking a short newsletter hiatus to welcome the newest little Coutts family Oyster (due any day)! In the meantime, keep finding us on Instagram @oystermv for weekly events, community updates and jobs, jobs, jobs!
See you on the other side,
Alex
