Island Time, Feb. 11: Snow Days, Full Hearts, and A Drive-Thru Meat Ball

Mother Nature sent us a valentine this week in the form of a double frosting of snow, making the Island look like a set from The Nutcracker, the sugar plum fairy due to dance in at any moment. Enchanting. The cure for pandemic blues is definitely a romp in the snow, but our clever Island has made sure there is more to do through the end of this most wintry of winter months. From Michael J. Celebrate Valentine’s Day with a special afternoon refuge safari to the Cape Pogue Light. The open-air, over-sand adventure (registration required) will mark a romantic day to remember, but if Sunday at noon doesn’t work for you, safaris are scheduled for both Friday and Saturday at sunset time (4:30 p.m. to 6 p.m.).
Through Sunday, Martha’s Vineyard Made is hosting a special pop-up shop in Vineyard Haven in honor of Valentine’s Day. Stop by 29 Main street for sweet treats and new handmade items from Island artisans. Open 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. today, tomorrow and Saturday; 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sunday.
On Thursday, Feb. 25, the Martha’s Vineyard Book Festival will hold its first ever winter event — a virtual discussion with Michael J. Fox, interviewed by author Harlan Coben, about his compelling new memoir, No Time Like the Future: An Optimist Considers Mortality. The 7 p.m. virtual event is free but registration is required.
The popular midwinter event at the Ag Hall, The Meat Ball, has morphed into a drive-thru event this year. Sign up by Feb.18th, and you’ll pick up your dinner on Feb. 20th at a designated time between 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. Meatball subs, banh mi, shuck-your-own oysters, and even pre-recorded music from local musicians are on the menu.
On Thursday, Feb. 25 at 4 p.m., award-winning author Skip Finley will present a virtual talk for the Martha’s Vineyard Museum focusing on William Martin, one of seven whaling captains Finley profiled in his book, Whaling Captains of Color: America’s First Meritocracy.
Back by popular demand, Membership Down, the no-holds-barred variety game show from The Oak Bluffs Library is going virtual on Friday, Feb. 12 at 7 p.m. Musical challenges, feats of derring-do, questions about, well, everything — you don’t want to miss this year’s contestants competing to win money for their favorite Island nonprofits.
