December 31, 2020
A year like no other is drawing to a close at last. Whew! How will you say so long to 2020 and hello to 2021? We checked the The Complete Martha’s Vineyard Calendar for some appealing ways to ring out the old and get busy enjoying the new. Happy New Year!
Thursday is your last opportunity to add your wishes to the Vineyard Community Wishing Treein Vineyard Haven’s historic William street neighborhood. Wishes, intentions and hopes written and left on the tree will be burned tonight in a New Year’s Eve observance.
For the first time since it was founded as an all-seasons restaurant 50 years ago, the Black Dog Tavern will close for the winter on Jan. 3. But for the first three days of the month, the Vineyard Haven waterfront icon will be serving its original menu — at 1971 prices.
On Saturday, the Martha’s Vineyard Film Center in Vineyard Haven will be open and screening Wild Mountain Thyme, the new feature from Moonstruck director John Patrick Shanley starring Emily Blunt, Jamie Dornan, John Hamm and Christopher Walken, at 4 p.m.. The movie also screens Sunday and Wednesday at 7:30 p.m.
Combine those New Year’s resolutions — to learn the ukulele or guitar, and to get more centered — with a five-week online Music as Meditation course starting Monday that will teach you the basics of playing, plus how to use music as a mindfulness practice. Taught by musician Eric Mulhern, the Zoom course is hosted by the Vineyard Haven Public Library.
Martha’s Vineyard is not known for its towering heights, but you can get to the top of it all — about 300 feet above sea level — and see wetlands, woodland groves, a wind-blasted coastal plain and the rocky ocean edge as well, on a hike through Menemsha Hills Reservation in Chilmark. Take the Prospect Hill spur for the best view.
