The Lights Are On: Island Time, Dec. 3-9

December 4, 2020

Martha’s Vineyard is giving the holiday season some extra love this year, with new decorations popping up alongside the beloved annual Christmas light displays. Even spots that are usually quiet in December, like Edgartown’s Dock street, are getting into the festive spirit with trees, lights and pop-up sales, while Vineyard Haven is making snow fall on Main street. Find all the holiday Island happenings in the Complete Martha’s Vineyard Calendar and consider the suggestions here for the week to come.

Let It Snow

Fridays and Saturdays through Dec. 19, snow is not only predicted but expected from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. on Vineyard Haven’s Main street, falling from snow machines amid a projected light display.

Also on Main street in Vineyard Haven—and on the internet—Louisa Gould Gallery hosts its annual Small Wonders art show, with affordable small works by 10 gallery artists including John Holladay, Donna Blackburn and Deborah T. Colter.
The annual Ocean Park holiday light show is up again in Oak Bluffs, thanks to Crossland Landscape. The lights are on every night from 5 p.m. to 10 p.m., and on Fridays and Saturdays you can tune your car radio to 88.5 FM to hear a soundtrack synchronized to the display.
A treasure hunt for little kids (and big ones) is afoot in Edgartown, where Teddies Around Town has hidden an army of toy bears in shop windows and other spots around the village.
Sail Martha’s Vineyard opens its winter lecture series Wednesday with guest speaker Bruce Strickrott, chief pilot of the famed Alvin submersible based at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution.
