Island Time, April 9-15: Online and Outdoors

April 9, 2020

If you’re not an essential worker — and if you are, we thank you! — then you might be feeling a little cabin fever after all this sheltering at home. This week we’ve got suggestions for things you can do safely outside or under your own roof — and often on your own schedule, as well, depending on the activity. Find more listings in the Complete Martha’s Vineyard Calendar. And to those who celebrate, we wish a happy Passover and a happy Easter.

Here’s a complete list of what’s open and what’s closed on the Vineyard.

Thursday, April 9 | Back to the land

The Trustees of Reservations is reopening all but one of its Martha’s Vineyard reservations today, including Cape Poge (no off-roading), Long Point, Menemsha Hills, Mytoi, Norton Point (no off-roading) and Wasque.

Friday, April 10 | Poetry and Passover

April is Poetry Month and the West Tisbury Library is celebrating with a series of live, Online Poetry Drop-In classes on Fridays from 3 p.m. to 4 p.m. The Martha’s Vineyard Hebrew Center hosts a virtual Passover Community Seder at 5 p.m.

Saturday, April 11 | Lend a hand

When you grab your mask for a weekend walk, why not grab a trash bag, too, and take part in the Vineyard Conservation Society’s month-long Earth Day cleanup?

Sunday, April 12 | Happy Easter!

Egg hunts are canceled and churches are empty today, but you’ll find many virtual Easter services—both real-time and pre-recorded—in our calendar.

Monday, April 13 | Littlest whaler

Discover the story of Laura Jernegan, the 6-year-old girl who went on a whaling voyage with her captain father in 1868, in a virtual exhibition titled Girl on a Whaleship on the Martha’s Vineyard Museum website.

Tuesday, April 14 | Film appreciation

Miss the movies? The Martha’s Vineyard Film Society is now streaming features online, including the documentary Fantastic Fungi, in its on-demand virtual screening room. Some are free and others require an existing subscription or rental fee. Meanwhile, Film Society managing director Bob Dutton’s popular Film Talksclass has moved to YouTube.

Wednesday, April 15 | Kindness still rocks

Remember the Kindness Rocks? They’re still there, on the beach between Fuller Street and Eel Pond in Edgartown, and there’s never been a better time to add your hopeful words to a rock or shell. Use paint, nail polish or a Sharpie—or just draw inspiration from the many messages others have left.
