Feb. 29 comes just once every four years—but it hasn’t arrived on a Saturday since 1992, and won’t again until 2048. A weekend this rare deserves celebration, and Martha’s Vineyard offers plenty of ways to make it a memorable one. Friday, Feb. 28 | Arts & film
More than three dozen Island artists explore an intriguing theme in the new group show at Featherstone Center for the Arts in Oak Bluffs, The Numbers Speak for Themselves. It’s open daily from noon to 4 p.m., along with the Featherstone gift shop, in the center’s Art Barn. (Read more about the show here.)
For Edward Gorey fans, the Vineyard Haven library has an exhibition of vintage posters by the charmingly eccentric Cape Cod artist, displayed on the lower level during library hours: Friday from 1 p.m. to 5:30 p.m., Saturday 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. and Sunday noon to 4 p.m.
Edgartown Cinemas is showing The Call of the Wild at 1:15 p.m., 4:15 p.m. and 6:45 p.m. and the Martha’s Vineyard Film Center in Vineyard Haven screens Portrait of a Lady on Fire at 7:30 p.m.
At the Cardboard Box in Oak Bluffs, DJ AP entertains beginning at 10 p.m.
Saturday, Feb. 29 | Dining & dancing
West Tisbury school chef Jenny DeVivo—soon to meet a national audience of millions on the Food Network series The Great Food Truck Race—gives a hands-on seasonal cooking lesson at the FARM Institute in Edgartown from 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.
The Fiber Arts Stitching Circle meets from 10 a.m. to noon at the Carnegie in Edgartown.
Misty Meadows Equine Learning Center in Oak Bluffs holds a volunteer training session today for ages 14 and above, from 10 a.m. to noon.
The Film Center shows 1917 at 7:30 p.m.
It’s Brazilian Night at the Barn Bowl & Bistro in Oak Bluffs, with authentic Brazilian food and drinks and 50 per cent off bowling, starting at 8 p.m. with dancing to DJ Boris from 9 p.m.
Mike Benjamin Band plays Offshore Ale in Oak Bluffs starting at 9:30 p.m.
Sunday, March 1 | Disc golf & alpacas
Meet the fuzzy, gentle denizens of Island Alpaca in Oak Bluffs at today’s Alpaca Open House from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Disc Golf Doubles starts at 10 a.m. at the Riverhead Disc Golf Course on Barnes Road.
Edgartown Cinemas shows best-picture-Oscar winner Parasite at 1 p.m.
The Film Center screens A Hidden Life at 4 p.m.
The Barn holds ballroom dance instruction beginning at 7 p.m.
