The after-Christmas lull is traditionally when we relax, reflect and recharge for the new year ahead. On Martha’s Vineyard, it’s also a time for outdoor hikes and indoor activities for all ages, from library storytimes to bowling, music and—of course—movies. You can find everything that’s happening on the Island in the Complete Martha’s Vineyard Calendar, and we’ve picked a few best bets for you here:

Friday, Dec. 27 | Absolutely free

At the Chilmark Public Library Used Book Sale, the price is right to read your way through the winter without spending a penny: Sale books, audiobooks and DVDs are free today from 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. and Saturday from 10:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Everyone’s invited to a Free Soup & Bread Lunch at the the West Tisbury Free Public Library from 11:45 a.m. to 12:45 p.m.

It’s still Christmas in Oak Bluffs, where the Crosslands Annual Christmas Displays in Ocean Park light up the night from 5 p.m. to 11 p.m.—coordinated with audio, via 88.5 FM, from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m.

At Edgartown Cinemas, Little Women plays at 1:15 p.m. and 8 p.m.

 

Saturday, Dec. 28 | Gift swap

If you received a Christmas gift that missed the mark, today’s White Elephant Gift Swap at the Edgartown Public Library is your chance to trade that new, still-packaged item for another you like bettter. The swap starts at 1 p.m. and all ages are welcome; children under 8 must be accompanied by an adult.

The Carnegie in Edgartown hosts Island author Thomas Dresser with a preview of his upcoming book, The Rise of Tourism on Martha’s Vineyard, from 2 p.m. to 3 p.m.

Glow Bowling under the black lights at the Barn Bowl & Bistro in Oak Bluffs starts at 5 p.m., for all ages till 9 p.m. and 21+ thereafter.

A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood plays at 4 p.m. at the Martha’s Vineyard Film Center in Vineyard Haven.

 

Sunday, Dec. 29 | Let’s dance

For all levels of play, Drop-In Pickleball at Airport Fitness in West Tisbury is open from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Opera Night, with tenor David Behnke, soprano Jenny Friedman and pianist Molly Sturges, begins at 4 p.m. at La Soffitta in Vineyard Haven.

Learn to trip the light fantastic, or just perfect your steps with Ballroom Danceinstruction at the Barn beginning at 7 p.m.

Edgartown Cinemas is showing Knives Out at 1:30 p.m. and 8 p.m.,  Frozen 2 at 5 p.m. and Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker at 1:30 p.m., 4:45 p.m. (3-D) and 8 p.m.

The Film Center has The Two Popes at 4 p.m. and Bombshell at 7:30 p.m.
