Island Time, November 21-24: Gathering and Giving

November 21, 2019

The week before Thanksgiving is always a festive time on Martha’s Vineyard, with lots of ways to celebrate the seasons of gathering and giving. This weekend you can make a wreath and a holiday card, learn to dance and to mix herbal mocktails, shop pre-holiday bargains and take your pick of classical and modern opera experiences—and those are just a few of the fun things going on around the Island. Find them all in the Complete Martha’s Vineyard Calendar.

Friday, Nov. 22 | Join the club

Get a jump on holiday gift-giving at the Rainy Day Pre-Holiday Palooza, from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the beloved Vineyard Haven shop, then hit the lanes for black-light Glow Bowling at the Barn in Oak Bluffs (21+ after 9 p.m.).

Great music tonight: The annual PA Club Membership Drive welcomes all to the Oak Bluffs social and charitable club from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m., followed by the Blue Switch Band playing blues until 11 p.m. The Jaywalkers, with Barbara Puciul Hoy and Jessie Leaman, play the Ritz in Oak Bluffs starting at 7 p.m.

We know some little ones who are pretty excited about watching Frozen 2 this weekend at the Edgartown Cinemas. Today the shows are 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. (in 3D). Also showing at the Edgartown Cinemas today is Ford V. Ferrari at 3:45 p.m. and Last Christmas at 7 p.m.

Take note: This weekend’s Wicked Good Musical Revue at the Martha’s Vineyard Playhouse in Vineyard Haven has been cancelled.

Saturday, Nov. 23 | Be the maker

The FARM Institute in Edgartown is holding a Fire Cider Tasting and Herbal Mocktail Class from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. this morning. Over at Long Point Wildlife Refuge in West Tisbury, Duck Day (from noon to 2 p.m.) is a family celebration, complete with hot cider and s’mores from the fire.

The Martha’s Vineyard Film Center screens the Met Opera production of Akhnaten, by composer Philip Glass, live from New York at 12:55 p.m.

Make Handcrafted Holiday Cards with Island artist Jennifer Burkin at the Carnegie in Edgartown from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m., or take part in this Wreath Making Workshop at Morrice Florist in Vineyard Haven starting at 1 p.m.

Movies today include Harriet at the Film Center at 3:30 p.m.

Sunday, Nov. 24 | Cut the rug

This morning, finalize your Thanksgiving menu with a look at Cook the Vineyard’s featured recipes. Then get an early start on holiday gift shopping by stopping in the Featherstone Holiday Gift Show from noon to 4 p.m. at Featherstone Center for the Arts in Oak Bluffs.

Opera Night at La Soffitta in Vineyard Haven begins at 4 p.m. and tonight at the Barn from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. you can learn to Ballroom Dance. Or head for the movies: Oscar contender Parasite shows at the Film Center at 7:30 p.m., and the Ritz hosts its weekly Holy Rock & Roll Revival starting at 7:30 p.m.
