Island Time 2, August 26-30: One Last Week
August 26, 2019
Somehow, we’ve come to the last week of August! Here are five good things to do over the next few days—find more in the Complete Martha’s Vineyard Calendar , and watch for our Thursday Island Time newsletter with Labor Day Weekend events.
1. Ungodly Pursuit, 7:30 p.m., Martha’s Vineyard Playhouse, Vineyard Haven
Join the audience for a one-night-only reading of this new play by Edward L. Beck, a Catholic priest and CNN commentator who tackles the sex abuse scandal in his latest work.
2. Inappropriate Storytime, 10:30 a.m. to 11 a.m., Tuesday, August 27, Oak Bluffs Public Library
Listen to unseemly stories, share gross jokes, and enjoy a silly craft. Best for ages 7 to 12; anyone under 8 must be accompanied by an adult—the right kind of adult, of course.
3. Marine Discovery Tour, 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m., Tuesday, August 27, Oak Bluffs Harbor
Cruise with a Felix Neck naturalist to explore Vineyard Sound aboard The Skipper. We may tow a plankton net and check traps for crabs, fish, and shellfish and try our hands at a little scup fishing.
4. Landing Party Reception, 5 p.m. to 8 p.m., Wednesday, August 28, Harbor View Hotel, Edgartown
Greet the arrival of the first person to swim from Nantucket to Martha’s Vineyard. English Channel swimmer Doug McConnell is expected to come ashore at about 6 p.m.
5. Pickpocket Bluegrass Band, Friday, August 30, 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m., Trinity Park Tabernacle, Oak Bluffs
The Tabernacle’s sunset concert series concludes with this fast-picking Island string band. Bring a picnic or purchase a meal from the food truck.
