Island Time, July 11-14: The Summer’s Tale

Welcome to the sweet spot of summer on Martha’s Vineyard. Water temperatures have reached the mid-70s, the days are long and warm and whenever the humidity gets too high, a helpful thunderstorm or two will blow through to clear the air.

On days like these, all Island roads lead to beaches. But there are plenty of other things to do on the Vineyard over the weekend to come, and we have some suggestions here.

Friday, July 12  | Family fare

Kids aged 8-12 can learn the basics of building robots in the 10:30 a.m. Robotics for Kids workshop at the West Tisbury Free Public Library. Those younger than 10 must be accompanied by a mature caregiver. All ages are invited to the annual Generations Picnic,  from 4:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at the Dr. Daniel Fisher House, with music, food, games and activities for every member of the family.

Romantic, fantastical, lively and co-starring a 9-year-old, The Winter’s Tale at the Tisbury Amphitheater is Shakespeare for the whole family. The outdoor show begins at 5 p.m. and repeats weekly on Thursday, Friday and Saturday through August 10, with additional Sunday performances on August 4 and August 11. Tonight is also the premiere of JabberWOCK of Ages at Camp Jabberwocky, at 7 p.m., followed by an ice cream reception; repeats Saturday.

In collegiate summer baseball, the Martha’s Vineyard Sharks face the Keene Swampbats at 7 p.m. in the Shark Tank in Oak Bluffs. Next door at the Martha’s Vineyard Performing Arts Center, second-generation reggae star Steven Marley hits the stage at 8 p.m.

At the movies, the Strand in Oak Bluffs is showing Toni Morrison: The Pieces I Am at 5 p.m. and Edgartown Cinemas has Yesterday at 6:15 and 9 p.m.

Saturday, July 13  |  Bowl, not bored

Outdoorsy youngsters aged 5 to 12 can step into the boots of a Cape Pogue Wildlife Refuge ranger for a morning—or a few—in the weekly Junior Refuge Ranger drop-off program, sponsored by the Trustees of Reservations on Chappaquiddick. The Chilmark Flea Market takes place weekly from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at 142 North road and the West Tisbury Farmers Market runs from 9 a.m. to noon at Grange Hall.

The Martha’s Vineyard Playhouse in Vineyard Haven hosts an artists’ reception for Carol Brown Goldberg from 5 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. and, at 7:30 p.m., a preview of the upcoming main stage production Vanya and Sonya and Masha and Spike, by Christopher Durang. At 7:30 p.m., pianist David Crohan joins the Island band Serendipity at the P.A. Club in Vineyard Haven. At Union Chapel, musical documentary The Apollo screens at 8 p.m. as part of the Martha’s Vineyard Film Festival.

The Strand hosts a special 30th-anniversary screening of Spike Lee’s groundbreaking Do the Right Thing at 8 p.m. and at The Barn Bowl & Bistro, the black lights are on for Glow Bowling from 9 p.m. to 11 p.m.

Sunday, July 14  |  Jaws returns

Get your improv fix this morning with theatre games for play, performance and social fun from 10 a.m. to noon at Eclipse Studio in Vineyard Haven, or join a open meditation at the Bodhi Path Buddhist Center in West Tisbury at 10 a.m.

Gallery receptions this afternoon include the latest group show at the Old Sculpin in Edgartown and Summer Art Show at the Field Gallery in West Tisbury. From 7 p.m. to 9 p.m., you can pay a sunset visit to the East Chop Lighthouse. At 8 p.m., the Vineyard Haven Band plays a concert in the Ocean Park, Oak Bluffs bandstand.

A reflective hot-air balloon will visit Long Point Wildlife Refuge at 6 p.m. for an event called New Horizon: Happening—The Future of Climate. At the movies, Edgartown Cinemas has Jaws at 6:15 p.m. and the Martha’s Vineyard Film Centerin Vineyard Haven is showing the yacht-racing documentary Maiden at 7:30 p.m.
