Island Time 2, June 17-20: Smooth Sailing

June 17, 2019

Another Vineyard summer weekend is in the books—here’s what to do over the next few days. In Thursday’s Island Time, we post our picks for the weekend to come.

1.  Celebrate the summer solstice early, starting at 6 p.m. today at Featherstone Center for the Arts in Oak Bluffs.

Get a jump on the season at Featherstone’s ninth annual solstice party with dance, music and a fire ceremony. Vineyard poets will read their work on the outdoor stage. The celebration is free and donations are welcome. Bring your own lawn chair, refreshments, sunscreen and bug spray.

2. Take a brewery tour, any Tuesday or Thursday from noon to 2 p.m. at Bad Martha Farmer’s Brewery in Edgartown.

Head brewer Calantoni Scarfone will explain and demonstrate the equipment and process he uses to create fresh beers and ales, often using ingredients from Island farms. Bad Martha’s is open until 7 p.m. for tasting and purchases.

3. Kick off a summer of family reading and enjoy ice cream from Ben & Bill’s, Tuesday, June 18 from 12:30 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. at the Oak Bluffs Public Library.

Kids can sign up for summer reading, roam the stacks and play on the library grounds, while everyone gets to slurp up some ice cream from one of the Vineyard’s favorite scoop (and chocolate) shops.

4. The West Tisbury Farmers Market adds its midweek market starting Wednesday, June 19, from 9 a.m. to noon at the Grange Hall.

The Wednesday market runs through August 28 and the Saturday market through Oct. 12, before it moves indoors to the Agricultural Hall for the weeks running up to Christmas. Founded in 1974, the market turns 45 this year.

5. Tap dancer Leonardo Sandoval and bassist Gregory Richardson perform new work, Thursday, June 20 at 7 p.m. at the Yard in Chilmark.

Afro-Brazilian culture informs the dance Partida, while Phase adds doubled footwork to the rhythmically propulsive music of composer Steve Reich. The performance repeats Saturday, June 22, also at 7 p.m.
