Island Time, June 6-June 10, 2019: To Market, To Market

June 6, 2019

You know where we will be Saturday morning at 9 a.m. when the bell rings: at the Grange Hall in West Tisbury, shopping bags in hand, waiting for the West Tisbury Farmers’ Market to open for its 45th season. With more than 40 Island vendors, longtime family farms and up-and-coming entrepreneurs alike, this is our one-stop, open-air source for everything locally grown—from flowers for the table to meats, vegetables, breads and desserts.

But first, we party! Tonight’s Best of the Vineyard Awards bash at Farm Neck kicks off at 6 p.m. and we still have some tickets—they’ll be available at the door. Join us under the tent for an evening of food, drink and fun as we celebrate the winners. It’s the perfect way to usher in the summer.

Friday, June 7 | Arbor or Harbor

Today’s forecast is for good strolling weather. Take the ferry to Chappaquiddick to meander with an arborist through the Japanese-inspired Mytoi garden at 11 a.m., learn about Edgartown’s maritime history on a walking tour of the harbor front (12:30 p.m.) or visit one of the Island’s most popular farms for an Island Alpaca walk (2 p.m.). Then cruise the shops and galleries of Vineyard Haven during the First Friday celebration, which goes from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m.

Live music is a big part of the First Friday event, with local bands performing along Main street and on the bandstand in Owen Park.

All that walking and dancing will give you an appetite. Dine on the late side at the Ritz or the Port Hunter and hang on to your table to enjoy live music after the kitchen closes. The Cardboard Box has DJs starting at 9:30.

At the movies, Rocketman plays the Capawock at 7:30 p.m.

Saturday, June 8 | Bee Sweet

Suit up in protective gear to explore the secret life of bees on a Honey Beehive Tour (9 a.m.) that’s suitable for ages 8 and up, then head to the West Tisbury Farmers Market for the season’s freshest produce. A Roses Workshop at Vineyard Gardens (11 a.m.) will teach you how to be successful in growing roses, and the Grey Barn & Farm offers a Cheese Talk and Tasting (5:30 p.m.), featuring their organic cheeses made with milk from grass-fed Chilmark cows.

Dance aficionados have a choice tonight: BalletCollective at Vineyard Arts Project (6 p.m.) or a Chicago-based double bill of Joanna Furnans and the Era Footwork Crew at The Yard at 7 p.m..

Edgartown Cinemas has Dark Phoenix and The Secret Life of Pets 2 tonight.

Sunday, June 9 | Music & Words

Breakfast is important and today at 10 a.m., the Ritz throws a Brunch Benefit for M.V. Family Planning, complete with live jazz music to accompany chef Vanessa House’s acclaimed cuisine. Ready to stroll some more? The Vineyard Artisans Summer Festivalbrings more than 120 artists to the Grange Hall to show and sell their work. Open at 10 a.m.

This evening, at 5 p.m., visit the Old Sculpin Gallery for the opening reception for new member artists Judy Schubert and Lizzy Schule. And at 6:30 p.m., former U.S. poet laureate Billy Collins gives his biennial reading at Featherstone Center for the Arts.

Photograph plays tonight at the film center at 7:30 p.m. Back at the Ritz, the weekly Holy Rock & Roll Revival gives Sunday a big send-off.
