Island Time, May 16-18: Lobster Tales

Island Time, May 16-18: Lobster Tales

May 16, 2019
Forget the weather. We have bigger fish to fry this weekend. And lobster rolls to eat — the first Grace Church Lobster Rolls of the season. We’ve got wine to drink. And restaurant openings to attend. And let’s not forget breakfast at Biscuits

It may not be fair to mention all this good stuff in front of those of you who are running in the Martha’s Vineyard Marathon and Half-Marathon on SaturdayBut hey, we’re going to do our part and get out and join the 5K Fun Run/Walk for Island Autism on Sunday at Katama Airfield.

And we can all meet up at the movies. Hotel Mumbai comes to the MV Film Center this weekend and the Keanu Reeves thriller John Wick: Chapter Three is onscreen at Edgartown Cinemas.

Friday, May 17  |  Bottled Up

Tonight you can B.Y.O.B. to Chilmark Tavern (first night of the season) or you can treat yourself to a five-course wine dinner at l’etoile in Edgartown. Hang around town afterwards and hear Johnny Hoy and the Bluefish at The Port Hunter.

Or head straight to the theater. Shelagh Hackett’s Solo Show: Kiss Me I’m Irish is at the M.V Playhouse at 7:30 p.m. There’s plenty of  music in O.B. tonight, too, with Philly D + The Roundup at the Ritz at 7:45 p.m. and DJAP at the Cardboard Box at 9:30 p.m.

Saturday, May 18  |  All in the Design

Another sure sign of a new summer season is the opening of the Oak Bluffs Steamship Authority Terminal today. So remember to double-check the terminal location if you’re picking up friends or coming over yourself. And if you’re heading to O.B and want to be part of the excitement at the Marathon finish linestop by Waban Park mid-morning.

Today you can join a guided walk of Caroline Tuthill Preserve in Edgartown with Sheriff’s Meadow at 10 a.m. or attend a workshop in basic landscape design at Vineyard Gardens at 11 a.m. Before you head out, gather all those old electronics you’ve been wondering what to do with and plan a drop-off at Martha’s Vineyard Community Services. As a bonus, drop-off fees for Spring Electronics Disposal Day (9 a.m. to 2 p.m.) benefit MVCS.

The Martha’s Vineyard Children’s Chorus performs at Union Chapel this evening at 5 p.m. And over at Felix Neck Wildlife Sanctuary, you can watch the moon rise over Sengekontacket Pond from a kayak at the full-moon event from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.

Sunday, May 19  |  That’s the Spirit

The Oak Bluffs Firemen’s Civic Association Bowl-a-Thon happens today at Barn, Bowl & Bistro. Ten five-person teams will compete at 11 a.m. and 3 p.m., and there’s a silent auction from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Two yoga workshops are designed to help Islanders navigate the stressful summer season. The Peace Yoga Workshop (12:45 p.m.) and the Yoga Therapy Workshop (3 p.m.) are both happening today at Eclipse Studio in Vineyard Haven.

The official launch of former Island poet laureate Justen Ahren’s new book of poetry, A Machine for Remembering, happens at Featherstone tonight at 6 p.m. Ahren’s book, three years in the making, includes black and white photographs from several trips to Europe to work with refugees and to document the stories of refugees living in camps and elsewhere on the continent.

And for a feel-good end to the day, head to the Ritz to hear the Brothers McMahon at the Holy Rock and Roll Revival between 7 p.m. and 10 p.m.
