Island Time, May 9 – 11: Pink and Green and Read All Over

Island Time, May 9 – 11: Pink and Green and Read All Over

May 9, 2019
This morning the Vineyard sky was the color of polished silver, washed with that strange post-shower luminosity. The sea lay down, calm and inky and unobtrusive, while the true spectacle — tiny chartreuse leaves — unfurled from the tangle of bare branches lining the horizon. Despite nature’s best efforts, spring in all its damp, cool, windy glory, has arrived on the Vineyard. Red tulips line white picket fences in Edgartown, and the town is ready to host Pink and Green Weekend in honor of mom. All over the Island, everyone is celebrating, even our pets; don’t miss the Dog Show and The Blessing of the Animals, both on Saturday.

Friday, May 10   |  Go Green

Start off the Pink and Green Weekend with a visit to Donaroma’s Nursery from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. for a Mother Earth Celebration that includes crafts, refreshments, a labyrinth, and horse-drawn carriage rides.

Mom might also enjoy the Sylvie Bags trunk show at the Nobnocket Inn in Vineyard Haven from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. Afterwards, head to the M.V. Film Center to see Dame Judi Dench in the new film Red Joan. On stage at the M.V. Playhouse is Molly Conole’s Solo Show Seaglass, Quilts & Song: Life in Pieces (7:30 p.m.).

Saturday, May 11 | Big Chill

The Pink and Green 5K (and fun run) begins at South Beach at 9 a.m. (registration 8 a.m.). Walkers and strollers welcome. The race benefits the MV Cancer Support Group and Lyme Disease Awareness. After that, if you can still walk (and eat!), check out the Big Chili Contest at the P.A. Club from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Or if you’d rather do chocolate than chili, hit the Murdick’s Fudge Open House in Edgartown.

Gardeners, this weekend you’ve got a chance to do some special plant shopping at the Annual Plant Sale at the Greenhouse in Oak Bluffs (10 a.m. to 4 p.m.) and the high school’s annual plant sale, which features plants grown by horticulture students (8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.).

The Mini-Maker Faire is on at the Ag Hall today from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The Minnesingers perform An American Mosaic tonight at 7 p.m. In fact there is so much going on today (art receptions, workshops, music and more), that we encourage you to check out a full list of today’s events here.

Sunday, May 12  |  Yes, Mom

Make a reservation for Mother’s Day Brunch at the Harbor View Hotel and enjoy new chef Patrice Martineau’s delicious modern global cuisine (11 a.m to 3 p.m.). Or head to the Dunes at the Winnetu Oceanside Resort for a Mother’s Day brunch buffet (10:30 a.m to 2:30 p.m.). Other brunch options include the new Town Bar & Grill in Edgartown (10 a.m to 3 p.m.) and the Barn, Bowl & Bistro (starting 11 a.m.).

If you’re looking for something different to do with Mom, take her on an adventure — an oversand trip to Cape Pogue Light for a Mother’s Day Tea at the Light. A great event for both mom and the kids is the Spring Fair May Day Festival at Slough Farm with pony rides, face painting, food by Everett Whiting and music by Mrs. Biskis. The event is 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. with a rain date of May 18.

Plus: Free Mother’s Day portraits at the West Tisbury library from 2 p.m to 4 p.m.
