Island Time, Feb. 14-17: Opportunity Knocking

February 14, 2019

There’s a breed of Vineyarder who prefers the winter over the summer. In fact, this species is quite populous. Sometimes it’s hard to identify one, as he or she may be covered in neoprene head to toe or swathed in fleece and wool. But they’re out there, enjoying the ocean and beach which, ironically, people pay big bucks to flock to for a mere six or eight weeks of the year, forgetting that the killer views and higher endorphin levels are available here the other 44 weeks of the year, without the crowds. Play your cards right, and you (and your dog) can have Lucy Vincent beach to yourself at sunset. Just sayin’.

We realize that while surfing and beachcombing may sound appealing to some, the rest of you have only one thing on your mind today: chocolate. Okay, and maybe flowers.

The talented floral crews at Morrice Florist and Donaroma’s can take care of the flowers (call quickly). Enchanted Chocolates in Oak Bluffs is ready to go with all kinds of chocolate gifts, and our beloved Chilmark Chocolates, open today at 10:30 a.m. for its last Valentine’s Day (the owners are retiring the shop at the end of the year), will have a line out the door we’re sure.

There are also Valentine’s Day pop-up dinners tonight at The Plane View and The Ritz, and guest Chef Austin Racine is cooking a special Valentine’s dinner at Park Corner.

Best of all, you can visit The Grey Barn and Farm farmstand from 3 p.m to 5 p.m. today to take your photo with a baby lamb.

Friday, February 15  |  Equal Time

Maybe you’re single and frankly glad that Valentine’s Day is over. This year, there’s a special event for you: a post-Valentine’s Day singles potluck at the P.A. Club (6 p.m. to 10 p.m.). If you’re looking for something a little more low-key, why not try Knit Night at Haven from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.

The high school’s exciting musical, an adaptation of Shakespeare’s As You Like It, happens tonight at the Performing Arts Center at 7 p.m. There are performances at 7 p.m. tomorrow night and 2 p.m. on Sunday. The new film about Laurel & Hardy, Stan and Ollie, plays at the MV Film Center tonight at 7:30 p.m. Over at Edgartown Cinema, Glass and Alita: Battle Angel are both showing at 6:45 p.m.

Saturday, February 16  |  Library Love

It’s amazing how many stimulating winter activities our Island Libraries host for us. This weekend we’re excited about Roxane Kapitan’s Regenerative Backyard Gardening Workshop at the West Tisbury Library from 10:30 a.m. to noon. Learn chess at the Oak Bluffs Library from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. Pick up some books at the Vineyard Haven library’s mini booksale from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. And at 2 p.m., enjoy a lively concert of Celtic favorites from the duo of fiddler Nikki Engstrom and guitarist/vocalist Sean Brennan at the Edgartown Library. Aquinnah Library has Kids Crafts at 11 a.m.

Die-hard runners will lace up their shoes this morning for the annual Martha’s Vineyard 20-Miler and Amity Island Relay, starting at 11 a.m. at the Steamship Authority Terminal in Vineyard Haven.

Three fun choices for this evening: a Chilmark Potluck Jam (6:30 p.m.), Jenny’s Drama Salon at the MV Playhouse (7 p.m.), and of course, As You Like It (7 p.m.). The Film Center is running the Oscar Shorts again this weekend. Tonight you can see the documentaries at 7:30 p.m.

Sunday, February 17  |  Hands On

This morning you can take a printmaking workshop with Fae Kontje-Gibbs at Featherstone (10 a.m.) or join Seastone Papers’ workshops and learn to put together a big-button monotype book today at 12:30 p.m. The bread-making workshopcontinues today at the Vineyard Haven Public Library at 12:30 p.m. with a lesson on sourdough proofing and mixing.

The legendary Paul Jackson (winner of too many Fair ribbons to count) will talk about soil and answer questions today at the West Tisbury library at 3:30 p.m. This event, sponsored by the First Congregational Church of West Tisbury’s Green Team, is sure to be packed.

An encore of the fabulous Joni 75: A Birthday Celebration is scheduled to show at the MV Film Center tonight at 7:30 p.m.
