Island Time, Feb. 7-10: Hope for the Flowers
February 7, 2019
Things are looking up. We have 10 hours of daylight. We hear a lot of garden-planning and seed-swapping talk on the street. (Yes, we hear other talk on the street, but we steer away from controversy.) We took advantage of the little warm-up this week to walk around the backyard, imagining where the new garden beds might go this spring. We are hopeful.
In defiance of hibernation, we are signing up for cooking classes, learning new crafts at Featherstone, watching Oscar-nominated films (in the theater—here come the Shorts!), and shopping. Yes, shopping. Just because the holiday season has passed doesn’t mean we shouldn’t show some love for local businesses who stay open all winter: how about an indoor sidewalk sale this weekend?
Of course, we’re always up for outdoor winter activities, too. Enjoy a winter walk at Polly Hill or a walk along Chilmark’s North Shore with VCS this weekend. And think spring.
Friday, February 8 | Lights, Camera, Action
Theater, film, music — you’ve got your choice of performances tonight. We’re excited about the Oscar-nominated short films that will be showing all weekend at the film center, and tonight the first five, the Live Action Shorts, will show at 7:30 p.m. Pathways is presenting another series of fascinating short films that look at initiatives to save our oceans. The films begin showing at 7:00 p.m. Over at Edgartown Cinema, The Lego Movie 2 hits the big screen (serious fun).
The talented crew of the Wicked Good Musical Revue return to the MV Playhouse tonight at 7:00 p.m. Or if you prefer to check out the future stars of the stage, watch Tisbury School’s performance of Alice in Wonderland Jr. at 6 p.m.
Saturday, February 9 | For Sale or Swap
Join the Trustees on Cape Poge today for a beach clean-up and hike, followed by a hangout at the lighthouse. Love the Rock begins at 11 a.m., but you’ll need to register ahead.
In addition to the Indoor Sidewalk Sale at Edgartown School (10 a.m. to 4 p.m.), there is also a big clothing and fine art sale at The Annex today in Vineyard Haven (11 a.m. to 6 p.m.). Kids can make Valentines at the Chilmark Library from 3 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. or participate in Kids’ Yoga and Valentines Craft Night at Eclipse Studio tonight from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.
Oscar Shorts continue today at the Film Center with the Animation nominees at 1 p.m. and the Documentary films at 7:30 p.m. A documentary about seed savers, seed activists, and the importance of saving heirloom seeds shows at the West Tisbury library at 12:30 p.m. right before the seed swap at 2 p.m.
Johnny Hoy and the Bluefish headline the Blues Blizzard at the Chilmark Community Center tonight from 7 p.m. to 11 p.m.
Sunday, February 10 | My One and Only
After the VCS Winter Walk at Spring Point (10 a.m.), head down to Vineyard Haven for lunch at the ArtCliff Diner. Stop in to Mocha Mott’s at 2 p.m. for the climate cafe.
This afternoon, Featherstone celebrates the opening of its new show, My One and Only, which features one new piece of work from artists all over the Island. The reception runs from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m.
And by the way, there’s a beer and cheese tasting at Offshore Ale this afternoon from 3:30 to 5 p.m. Cheeses are from The Grey Barn and Farm.
