Learn Something New—and Have Fun—on Martha’s Vineyard

Martha’s Vineyard is all about experiences, from enjoying the Island’s natural beauties to savoring creative local cuisine, that stay with visitors long after the trip is over.

Another way an Island sojourn can enrich your life in a long-lasting way is to take one of the many classes and courses available here year-round. If you’ve ever wanted to make jewelry, play the ukulele or learn to cook a French bouillabaisse, there’s a one-day class for you on Martha’s Vineyard—this month!

There are learning experiences and activities for kids as well as adults, and many of them are free. From the Calendar, here are some of your upcoming options for short-term classes and workshops:

Live Life on Fire: A Creative Mini-Retreat, Feb. 6, 4 p.m.-5:45 p.m., West Tisbury Free Public Library: Using guided visualization, breath work, journaling and paint, discover the power of your own creative inner fire. Free, pre-registration recommended.

Featherstone Uke Jam, Wednesdays 7 p.m.-9 p.m., Featherstone Center for the Arts. Learn to play your ukulele with a fun group. All instruments welcome. Refreshments. Free.

 

For kids 7 and older: Ceramic Exploration, Feb. 9 & Feb. 16, 10 a.m.-12 p.m., Featherstone Center for the Arts. Students will learn and experiment with multiple techniques in construction and decoration of functional and sculptural pieces. $30.

Cooking with Carolina: Tagine, Feb. 9, 2:30 p.m.-3:30 p.m., Oak Bluffs Public Library. Learn how to use this shapely North African cooking pot, see it in action and taste test the delicious results. Free.

Valentine’s Day Crafting, Feb. 9, 3 p.m.-4:30 p.m., Chilmark Public Library. Create handmade embossed cards and book page flowers, listen to some tunes, and snack on some chocolates. Free.

Learn to Make Chocolate Truffles, Feb. 9, 3 p.m.-5 p.m., Vineyard Haven Public Library. For ages 12 and older. Free.

For kids: Afterschool Valentine’s Crafting, Feb. 13, 3 p.m., Chilmark Public Library. Free.

Ballroom Dance, Sundays 6:30 p.m.-9 p.m., The Barn. $5 suggested donation.

Ukulele Workshop, Feb. 12, 1 p.m., Edgartown Public Library. Bring an instrument or borrow one of the library’s. Free.

Soldering Stackable Rings, Wednesdays from Feb. 13, 2 p.m.-5 p.m., Featherstone Center for the Arts. In one three-hour class you will complete a wearable ring. $80.

Hand Stitching and Mending Workshop, Feb. 13, 4:30 p.m. to 6 p.m., Chilmark Public Library. Bring an item that needs repair and a fashion professional will show you how to fix it. Fabric scraps and tools provided. No experience necessary. Free,

Cooking Bouillabaisse, Feb. 12, 1 p.m.-5 p.m., Kitchen Porch Catering. Learn to make a mayonnaise, a fish stock, a perfectly flavored bouillabaisse and a chocolate soufflé, then enjoy the meal. BYO wine. $124.

Regenerative Backyard Gardening Workshop, Feb. 16, 10:30 a.m.-12 p.m., West Tisbury Free Public Library. Learn how to use regenerative gardening practices to grow edible plants, conserve water, eliminate your use of fossil fuels, and make compost in your own backyard. Free.
