Shopping Around the Island: MVOL’s Guide to Farm Stands

Shopping Around the Island: MVOL’s Guide to Farm Stands

August 3, 2018

With an agricultural fair that’s 157 years old, a farmers’ market operating continuously for almost 45 years, a rich history of sheep farming — and more than three dozen farms currently growing food here on the Island — the Vineyard is an agricultural jewel. If you’re interested in good food, sustainability, conservation, and supporting local economies, find out below where you can shop at a local farm stand or farm store. Make a list of a few to visit and use that as an excuse to take a scenic drive around the Island.

Stop by a Farm Stand or Visit a Farm Store

While some larger farms have retail farm stands that are more like markets or stores, the majority of on-farm sales happen at modest self-serve farm stands. Visiting these charming outlets is a throwback to simpler times, and in addition to fresh eggs, Island-raised meat, and plenty of just-picked vegetables and flowers, you’ll often find something unexpected that the farmer is growing in small amounts or not selling at the West Tisbury Farmers’ Market (see more on that below).

When shopping at farm stands, be sure to bring cash, please leave the dog in the car, and stay within the public area of the farm. Don’t wander into fields or open gates — inadvertently letting livestock out or pests in can wreak havoc with a farmer’s operation.
