Since 1983, the focus of MacNelly Cohen Architects has been on residential work – additions, renovations, and new construction – on our home base of Martha’s Vineyard, with additional projects on Nantucket, Connecticut and Rhode Island. Our work reflects the concerns & desires of each client while valuing a connection to the landscape, the celebration of light and an expression of character through building. We invite you to browse our portfolio and contact us to discuss your plans.
The rich historical fabric of the island provides us with many contexts within which to work: Shingle Style, Greek Revival, Carpenter Gothic, simple farmhouse. It is our intent to refer lovingly to these precedents, while allowing a sense of modernity to pervade our work as well. We believe that the resulting dialogue between the present and the past contributes to the richness and resonance of the places we make. The diverse nature of the work represented by the photographs and drawings here is therefore a reflection of the differences found from project to project in site, in program, and, especially, in the concerns and desires of each client. At the same time, we hope that the images will also reveal a common set of qualities which we seek to bring to our buildings: volumetric clarity, the celebration of light, a connection to the landscape, and an expression of character through building. In addition to our residential projects, other recent work has included several public projects, including the Chappaquiddick Community Center; the Featherstone Meetinghouse for the Arts, an arts-based community center to occupy the buildings of the former Featherstone Farm in Oak Bluffs; a Meditation Hall with community rooms in Acton, Massachusetts and the Martha’s Vineyard Public Charter School.
Our residential work has been featured in a variety of publications, including Architectural Detailing in Residential Interiors, published by the Whitney Library of Design; Small House Design, published by PBC International; The Boston Globe Magazine; and several other publications.
