Memorial Day

As Memorial Day weekend approaches, with thoughts of the summer season beginning, the Vineyard’s elementary school students will lead the way once again in reminding everyone what the holiday truly means.
On Friday, students at the Chilmark, Tisbury, Edgartown and Oak Bluffs schools will make their annual pilgrimage to the ocean to salute armed forces members who have died in the service of the country.
Students in Edgartown will head to Memorial Wharf, walking down Main street as residents cheer them on from the sidewalks. At Memorial Wharf they will hear from service members about the deeper meaning of the holiday, before they toss flowers into the water.
Tisbury School students will walk to Owen Park dock, in Chilmark the students will gather in Menemsha, and in Oak Bluffs the students will head to the harbor.
Poems will be read, Taps will be played and soldiers will be honored in this essential Island tradition
