Spring Arrives
March 21, 2024
The pinkletinks are in full throat, letting loose their songs of love. To drive by or wander the shoreline of any Island pond is to be serenaded with spring and its siren song of renewal.
There are activities flourishing in every corner of the Island, but the pinkletinks have no online link or scheduled time for the curtain to rise or fall. All it takes is a moment of awareness during a busy day — a window rolled down, the radio turned off and the heart turned on.
Or take note of those other pond dwellers who have recently arrived: the young anglers and their parents casting their luck into the water as freshwater fishing season has begun. The offering here is a moment of time travel, the sight of a young boy or girl, a fishing pole and a bobber floating on the surface. The bobber holds much more than an earth worm. It is hope and anticipation, mystery and serenity.
It is ageless, this scene, and it calls out to you, whispering exactly what you need to hear at exactly the right moment. What that is, only you can discern.

A huge line formed outside the West Tisbury Library on March 22, 2014. It was a cold morning, but that didn’t deter over 150 people from gathering, many of them children, some poised as if about to begin a running race. The goal: to be the first one inside the new West Tisbury Library, which opened that day after years of construction. Ten years later, it feels as if the new library has always been there, forever fueling a community of readers, events, art exhibits, even passport help. To commemorate the moment, the library is throwing a birthday party this Saturday from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. As fitting for a ten year old’s party, there will be cake.
Friends of Family Planning will host a lip sync contest to benefit the organization on Friday, March 22 at the Loft in Oak Bluffs. Showtime is from 7 to 11 p.m., with doors opening at 6 p.m. The audience is key and will be doing the judging. After the show, DJ Dern takes over to fill the dance floor. All profits benefit the mission of Friends of Family Planning
Wicked Good is back, this time celebrating 10 years of rocking revues. The cabaret style performances have been an off-season staple, turning gray, winter skies into technicolor with song and dance medleys. The reunion shows take place at the Martha’s Vineyard Playhouse, on March 22, 23 and 24. Read the story here.
