A Frosty Blanket

A Frosty Blanket

January 25, 2024

Baby, it’s been cold outside! But with temperatures projected to rise, it’s a good time to get back outside and enjoy the Island’s beauty. Be a Beach Befriender and help clean up the Oak Bluffs waterfront on Sunday, Jan 28. Or go inland on Sunday, Feb. 4 when the Martha’s Vineyard Land Bank staff leads a guided walk through Pennywise Path. Bundle up before you do!

If you prefer to stay cozy indoors, you have a choice of venues to hear local musicians on Saturday, Jan. 27, including the Chilmark Potluck Jam, Black Dog Bakery Cafe and Martha’s Vineyard Hebrew Center. Next week’s Restorative Sound Journey at Peaked Hill Studio will transport you inward. Or move your body at the Church Street Tennis events on Sundays or at Airport Fitness’ Pickleball Tournament next week.

Check The Complete Martha’s Vineyard Calendar for more ideas for the whole family, any day of the week.

Friday with Feathered Friends

A full moon will light up the sky when ranger staff from Felix Neck Wildlife Sanctuary lead a Full Moon Owl Prowl during S’Mores and More on Friday, Jan. 26. From 5 to 6 p.m., you can get your gooey marshmallow-graham cracker-chocolate fix around the bonfire before heading onto the trails for a to look for, listen to and learn about about our wise nocturnal friends, the owls.

Big Red

On Saturday, Jan. 27, the Martha’s Vineyard Museum celebrates a new exhibit featuring America’s magical 25-foot-tall canine: Clifford the Big Red Dog. The opening celebration from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. will feature craft stations, a museum-wide bone scavenger hunt and a chance to greet Clifford as a friendly, costumed character ready for photo opportunities. The family-friendly, all-ages exhibit Clifford: Our Big Red Dog will be on display through July 14 and highlights not just Clifford and his friend Emily Elizabeth but Norman Bridwell, the longtime Island resident who drew Clifford and his pals from the studio at his Edgartown cottage.

Anything Goes

Membership Down, the Island’s only no-holds-barred variety game show, returns on Tuesday, Jan. 30 for a new round of fast-paced, comic quick thinking! The fun starts at 7 p.m. at the Portuguese American Club in Oak Bluffs. Arrive early and enjoy dinner from Mo’s, which is open until 7:30 p.m.

Eat Local

Enjoy a warm meal and time with friends old and new at the Agricultural Society’s new series of community dinners, Local Food Community Potluck. The first gathering takes place on Thursday, Feb. 1 from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Agricultural Hall in West Tisbury and offers an opportunity to learn more about what the society does. (Hint: it’s not just the Fair) Bring a dish incorporating your favorite local foods, whether they’ve been grown or made here. Need inspiration for what to bring? Check out Cook the Vineyard, the Gazette’s site for food lovers and community, which has plenty of recipes that take advantage of Island ingredients.

Big Night Out

Get your fancy pants ready for the 27th annual Big Night Out, the annual fundraiser for Vineyard Montessori School! This year the fun can be found at the Grange Hall on Saturday, Feb. 3 from 6 to 9 p.m.!
