Reelin’ in the Year

Reelin’ in the Year

January 21, 2024

Let’s drink a cup of kindness as the old year passes! Enjoy Chef Deon’s delicious soups available today and tomorrow at the West Tisbury Public Library as part of the annual Community Soup and Bread Lunch or team up your family for Black Dog Trivia Night on Friday.

Then ring in the new year by movin’ and groovin’ to live music on New Year’s Eve when Johnny Hoy and the Bluefish play The Ritz Cafe and Serendipity kicks things up at the Portuguese American Club. Starting at 10 p.m., DJ Smooth B will be spinning vinyl at The Ritz to ensure your 2024 comes in with great tunes. Check What’s Open on Martha’s Vineyard for restaurants serving holiday meals.

You can start anew on Monday by helping the Beach Befrienders with the First Day Lobsterville Sweep, getting in on the pickleball craze, or setting resolutions while gazing from a high hilltop on the First Day Hike at Menemsha Hills.

Check The Complete Martha’s Vineyard Calendar for ideas for the whole family, any day of the week. We’ll be back in your inbox on Thursday, Jan. 11 and every two weeks until Spring. Happy New Year!

New Blooms

Enjoy a few colorful blooms before deep winter sets in! On Friday, Dec. 29 from 4 to 6 p.m., Louisa Gould hosts a reception celebrating the new Winter Blooms exhibit at her gallery on Main street in Vineyard Haven. Enjoy a champagne toast, meet local artist Peggy Turner Zablotny and view 30 new paintings of flowers in all shapes and forms. Can’t make it on Friday? Winter Blooms will be on view daily from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. through March 31.

A Chock Full Jam

More than 31 musical acts including Pickpocket, Jason Jarrell, Rachel Baird, Big Weather and Emmett Athearn will fill the stage at the Chilmark Community Center on Saturday, Dec. 30. That could only mean one thing: time for the 61st Chilmark Potluck Jam! Bring a dish to share while catching up with friends and the local music scene at this free gathering. The performers start at 5 p.m. — an earlier start time than usual — because there’s so much to enjoy.

High Flying

Offshore Ale Company and Lazy Frog in Oak Bluffs wish a happy 2024 to all. They’re setting up the new year to be full of adventure, fun, fellowship and outdoor exploration. Watch the spheres fly high at the 16th Annual Offshore Ale – Lazy Frog Disc Golf Tournament on New Year’s Day. Meet up at 9:30 a.m. at Offshore for registration and breakfast sandwiches before the tournament begins at Riverhead Disc Golf Course at 11:30 a.m. Prizes and a party at the Portuguese American Club are the rewards, as well as knowing your registration fee helps to maintain the disc golf course.

Nooks and Crannies

If you enjoy the nooks and crannies of an English muffin, why not learn to create your own? Vineyard Baker Teri Culletto starts her Artisanal Breads of the World series at the FARM Institute in Edgartown with a workshop on how to make English muffins. The event takes place on Saturday, Jan. 6 from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. If your mouth is watering at the idea of bread baked fresh in your own home, check the schedule for workshops for making Italian ciabatta, Kolache sweet pastry breads and other varieties.

Cut Up

In the art of paper cutting, every scrap counts. Slough Farm resident artist Jen Jones leads Ordinary Visions, an introductory workshop on Saturday, Jan. 6 where you can learn the endless variations of shapes and images possible in paper cutting, whether you’re creating a small piece or a large mural, a flat work or something three dimensional, to tell your story. No experience is necessary to participate in this workshop from 10:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. but bringing photos to spark the imagination will help!
