December 3, 2023

Doesn’t it suddenly feel as if the holidays are fast approaching? Festive artisan markets are opening up: the World Market Holiday Pop-Up Shop is on at the Capawock in Vineyard Haven, Featherstone’s Holiday Gift Show is in full swing, and on Friday Island Made Holidays at Gayle Gardens opens.

Don’t worry if you’re not ready for shopping yet. For fun — and help with your Thanksgiving menu — take the Easy as Pie class at The FARM Institute. Or maybe you’d rather curl up with a good book: pick one up at the Friends of the West Tisbury Library Fall Book Sale. Or enjoy one of the highlighted events below, including great opportunities to hear live music.

If you’re looking for Thanksgiving menu ideas or to buy pies and side dishes, visit Thanksgiving Central over at cookthevineyard.com. And be sure to check out The Complete Martha’s Vineyard Calendar for a regularly updated list of all Island events and activities.

Dynamic Duo

Live music is back on tap at Offshore Ale! Now and through the end of May, Johnny Hoy and Delanie Pickering will belt and growl the blues every Thursday night. Catch them tonight — but Offshore will be closed next Thursday for Thanksgiving. Start your holiday early next Wednesday, Nov. 22, when Mike Benjamin will bring his guitar and talent to Offshore. The start time for music is 6:30 p.m.

To Market, To Market

Whether you’re looking for Thanksgiving ingredients or just want to stock your winter pantry, visit your favorite farmers and makers at the West Tisbury Winter Farmers Market this Saturday, Nov. 18, 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. indoors at the Agricultural Hall in West Tisbury. The next winter market will be held on Saturday, Dec. 16.

Fire Powered

On Saturday, Nov. 18, Micah Thanhauser invites people of all ages to Merry Farm Pottery for a Holiday Kiln Opening. Celebrate the new wood-burning kiln in which Micah fires his unique pieces of pottery. Kiln demonstrations, music, quilts by guest artist Pam Flam and food and coffee made by Nina Levin will all be available for enjoyment from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Serenity on Sunday

On Sunday, Nov. 19, the Martha’s Vineyard Chamber Music Society presents Gala Trio at the Edgartown Public Library for its annual Thanksgiving weekend concert. From 4 to 6 p.m., works by Clara Schumann, Johannes Brahms and others will be played on violin, cello and piano.

Get a Head Start

If your Thanksgiving week includes plans for a nature walk, why not join guides from The Trustees of Reservations for a Family Hike at Wasque? As a group, you’ll explore coastal beach, sand plain and pitch pine forest environments. The hike is recommended for anyone age 6 and older and reservations are required. It takes place from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 22 — a great way to build your appetite for Thanksgiving dinner or burn calories to make room for the meal ahead!
