Walking In Their Footsteps

Walking In Their Footsteps

November 9, 2023

Who are your heroes? Perhaps they include friends or neighbors who left the security of the Island to serve their country. This Saturday, Nov. 11, Islanders will honor service people with Veterans Day commemorations. The music of bagpipes and bugles will fill the air in Oak Bluffs on Saturday morning when the annual Veterans Day Parade proceeds from Nancy’s restaurant to Ocean Park, starting at 10:45 a.m. On Sunday morning, anyone can enter to walk or run in the no-frills Veterans Day 5K, which supports the Martha’s Vineyard Community Services veterans outreach program. That afternoon, Martha’s Vineyard Film Society’s screening of Mending the Line, followed by a discussion with local heroes, will serve as a fundraiser for the Island’s first veterans housing site. Free admission for vets.

There are many more ways to enjoy the Island over the week ahead. Find ideas below and be sure to check out the full roster of events and activities on The Complete Martha’s Vineyard Calendar.

Love the Land

Where else but the Vineyard can you enjoy an evening of films about local farmers, conservationists and the creative spirit? Head to the Grange Hall in West Tisbury tonight, Thursday, Nov. 9, for four films, including A Painter Who Farms about Allen Whiting. Mr. Whiting and Simon Athearn will lead a discussion after the films, which begin at 7 p.m.

Something Wicked

Wicked Good Musical Revue, an evening of song featuring an ensemble of Island singers and musicians, returns to the Martha’s Vineyard Playhouse this weekend. Performances start on Friday, Nov. 10 at 7 p.m. and continue through Sunday afternoon. The cast of returning and first-time performers will sing songs sure to delight.

Feel the Beat

The Yard and PathwaysArts join forces on Friday, Nov. 10 to bring East African rhythms to Chilmark. Ugandan dancer, educator and musician Godfrey Muwulya returns to the Island for a performance of high-energy dancing and drumming, accompanied by the Milokan Drummers and Rick Bausman and The Sliptime Band. An all-ages dance class follows the performance. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. for a 7 p.m. start.
