Have a Ball

Have a Ball

November 2, 2023

Wherever your feet take you this weekend – from the Strand Jam on Friday night to the Barn Raisers Ball on Saturday night – enjoy the Island in all its fall finery. And don’t forget to turn your clocks back: daylight savings time ends at 2 a.m. on Sunday. Then grab all the sunshine you can by taking a magical walk on the Island Folk Pottery Sculpture Trail or by meeting your neighbors on one of the walks organized by local libraries, Walk With Us in Oak Bluffs and Wednesday Walk the Chop in Vineyard Haven.

Out of doors or inside, there’s much more to do in the coming week on the Island. Find more ideas below and be sure to check out the full roster of events and activities on The Complete Martha’s Vineyard Calendar.

Cast On!

Featherstone Center for the Arts helps usher in knitting season with Yarn in the Art Barn tonight, Thursday, Nov. 2. Join fellow fiber artists to explore Featherstone’s pattern library and build your yarn collection through the textures and colors that will be for sale. The event takes place in Featherstone’s Art Barn from 5 to 7 p.m.

Fur Friends

This month’s Lunch Lecture at the Martha’s Vineyard Museum offers a chance to learn about animal care on the Island and meet the local heroes who care for animals needing new homes. On Friday, Nov. 3, Lisa Dawley and Gordon Healy from the Animal Shelter of Martha’s Vineyard are the featured Lunch Lecture speakers from 12 to 12:45 p.m. Pre-register and enjoy a light lunch from Little House Cafe.

Rhythms of the Night

PathwaysArts kicks off its wintertime We Dance series on Friday, Nov. 3 with an evening of salsa music and dancing. Christina Montoya will lead Salsa Suelta dance lessons at 7 p.m. DJ dancing begins at 8 p.m., starting with the sounds of salsa. Doors open at 6:30 p.m.

Raise the Roof

Every year on the first Saturday in November, Islanders commemorate the completion of the new Agricultural Hall back in 1994. This year, the fun expands to two events. From 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., visit the Ag Hall for snacks and celebration at the new Barn Raisers Day gathering.

People of all ages can use candy, crafts and Legos to build miniature versions of the barn that will then be displayed that night at the Barn Raisers Ball. The 29th version of this annual event takes place at the Ag Hall from 7 to 10 p.m. Bring a dessert for the potluck table, enjoy music from Johnny Hoy and the Bluefish and get ready to dance.

Meet at the Bight

Tall trees alongside graceful trails, grassy meadows, a pond full of rare clam shrimp and 1,300 feet of beach fronting the Vineyard Sound: Great Rock Bight in Chilmark has so much to offer explorers. On Sunday, Nov. 5, staff from the Martha’s Vineyard Land Bank will lead a Guided Walk through the property, crossing through a variety of environments and glimpsing far-ranging views. The walk begins at 1 p.m. and lasts approximately two hours. Carpooling is encouraged because parking is limited.
