September Skies

September Skies

September 29, 2023
There’s something about the light in September – how it skims across the water, braces the clouds and emboldens the sunsets. While it’s putting on a show, it’s also sending us subtle messages of change: days are shorter, a storm may be coming and time is precious.
So, make time to go fishing: The 78th Striped Bass and Bluefish Derby begins at 12:01 a.m. on Sunday, Sept. 10. (Once it starts, you can find updates here.) Why not fly a kite, hike through Menemsha Hills at sunset or meander through Mytoi? When the sun goes down, take in one of the films in the 18th Martha’s Vineyard International Film Festival. And remember you can always browse The Complete Martha’s Vineyard Calendar for many more ideas, from art shows to live music to kids activities.
Take in the artwork at Mariner Gallery in Edgartown during its Summer Soiree on Friday, Sept. 8 from 6 to 9 p.m. On view is a collection of classical realist paintings, antiques and sculptures.
Ever admire those outdoor garden chairs at Polly Hill Arboretum? Horticulturalist Dan Benarcik will teach you to make your own. Join his workshop at the arboretum on Saturday, Sept. 9 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Go fly a kite at the annual Martha’s Vineyard Wind Festival in Ocean Park on Saturday, Sept. 9. Kite making, model sailboat racing, frisbee games and, of course, kite flying will all be happening from 10:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Learn more about Native American traditions at the Annual Aquinnah Powwow this Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 9 and 10. Multiple tribes will celebrate with drums, dancers and heritage-based ceremonies at Aquinnah Circle. Gates open at 11:30 a.m. and grand entry is scheduled for 12:30 p.m.
Just in time for fall and winter soups, Featherstone Center for the Arts in Oak Bluffs is holding its Potters Bowl. Buy beautiful bowls that have been made by local potters and donated for this annual fundraiser. From 4 to 6 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 10, fill your bowl with soup, bread and dessert and enjoy the beauty when it is empty.
Wag your tail for some rescued waggytails on Saturday, Sept. 9 from 5 to 11 p.m. at Nomans in Oak Bluffs. Angels Helping Animals is holding a fundraiser to support its dog rescue, care and adoption services. Enjoy food and music played by the Black Eyed Susans while bidding on silent auction items.
