Ticket to Ride

August 17, 2023
We can’t blame you if you’ve got the 161st Martha’s Vineyard Agricultural Fair and Livestock Show on your mind. It begins this morning at 11 a.m. and ends Sunday evening at 7 p.m., offering something for everyone, from live music and food trucks to competitions and carnival rides.
But for those of you who get your fair fill in one outing, there’s more – much more — to do in the next several days. Highlights include Harlem to Hollywood, Malik Yoba’s one-man show at the Tabernacle on Saturday, August 19; the new production, The Outcasts of Penikese Island, playing now at the Martha’s Vineyard Playhouse; and the new show at The Carnegie in Edgartown, Living Landmarks: Scrimshaw, which opened this week. Read on for more highlights and be sure to check The Complete Martha’s Vineyard Calendar for regularly updated event listings.
Oak Bluffs is the place to be on Friday, August 18. Most people will head to the annual Oak Bluffs Fireworks displayand the Vineyard Haven Band concert in Ocean Park beforehand. But there’s also Art on the Island at MV Salads from 5:30 to 9:30 p.m.; DJ SmoothB at Noman’s starting at 6 p.m.; The BlueSwitch Blues Band plays The Ritz Cafe starting at 8 p.m and then the Dukes of Circuit Ave take the stage at 10:30 p.m.; and the Martha’s Vineyard Comedy Festival closes its series with a performance that starts at 8 p.m.
Saturday, August 19 is Goldfish Day at Mytoi on Chappaquiddick. Learn about the role of goldfish in Japanese culture at the tranquil Trustees of Reservations garden. Crafts, garden strolls and guidance on natural species begins at 9:30 a.m. and ends at 11 a.m.
On Saturday August 19 and Sunday August 20 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. each day, Marsha Winsyrg is holding an African Crafts sale on the porch of her home in West Tisbury. Sales of jewelry, basketry, cloth, carvings and wall hangings benefit children with disabilities and their families in Zambia.
Vineyard Preservation Trust will hold a Community Contra Dance at the Grange Hall in West Tisbury on Tuesday, August 22 from 6 to 9 p.m. It’s free and for all ages and levels of experience.
David Crohan, a longtime favorite of Vineyard music fans, will perform a concert of piano music at the Edgartown Public Library on Tuesday, August 22 at 8 p.m. The piano he’ll be playing on is one he donated to the library in 2020.
We know how challenging it is to plan your August schedule; to make sure you’ve got the latest information, check The Complete Martha’s Vineyard Calendar, which is updated regularly.
