It’s show time! There’s a wealth of talent gathering on the Island in the week ahead; be sure to treat yourself to a performance and buy your tickets now. The Martha’s Vineyard Concert Series is bringing two internationally-acclaimed bands to the Martha’s Vineyard Performing Arts Center in Oak Bluffs on Saturday, July 29. At 4 p.m. The Wallflowers — fronted by Jakob Dylan — will take the stage. At 8 p.m., the trio Nickel Creek will play a concert as a 40th anniversary celebration of and benefit for MVY Radio.
Next up: The 12th Annual Martha’s Vineyard Comedy Fest begins on Monday, July 31 at the Strand Theatre and runs through August 18. And from July 31 to August 4, it’s Documentary Week at the Martha’s Vineyard Film Society; post-screening discussions feature visiting producers and directors as well as Island experts.

Make plans to watch the sunset at the Gay Head Cliffs tonight: the Gay Head Lighthouse is open! During July and August, the Island’s first lighthouse will be open from 6 p.m. to sunset on Thursdays and Fridays. Daylight visiting hours are also available from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily.
Seastone Papers in West Tisbury has been holding small-group workshops recently, instructing in the craft of making art from textured papers. On Monday, July 31, the practice to explore from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. is suminagashi, a Japanese paper marbling technique. Sign up at seastonepapers.com.
Two Fundraisers, Two Nights, Same Beautiful Location
Tonight, Thursday, July 27, at 5:30 p.m., the Vineyard House, the only sober living space on the Island, will hold its annual fundraiser, the Water Tasting by the Sea, at the Friedman Estate on Oyster Pond in Edgartown. Tickets are now only available at the door.
The Martha’s Vineyard Boys & Girls Club’s summertime fundraiser, A Night for the Blue and White, will be held at 6 p.m. on Friday, July 28, also at the Friedman Estate. Amy Schumer is this year’s special guest. The event begins at 6 p.m. Buy tickets here.
Join Harbor Homes for a two-day-long art show where sales of artwork benefit people who are homeless on Martha’s Vineyard. The Give Me Shelter exhibit at the Grange Hall on Tuesday, August 1 and Wednesday, August 2 features works created by artists including Billy Hoff, Michael Johnson, Rez Williams, Wendy Weldon and many more.
Explore the biodiversity of our local state forest on a walk led by environmentalists from the Friends of the Manuel Correllus State Forest, the state’s Department of Conservation and Recreation, BiodiversityWorks and Vineyard Conservation Society. The two-hour-long walk leaves Gate 18 at the state forest on Thursday, August 3 at 10 a.m.

There’s plenty of live music to enjoy in the next few days. Here are a few highlights:
  • The Dukes of Circuit Avenue play the Music in the Square concert series in Edgartown on Thursday, July 27 from 6 to 8 p.m.
  • Philly D rocks The Ritz Cafe on Friday, July 28 from 8 to 10 p.m.
  • A Far Cry Quartet performs on Sunday, July 30 at the Chilmark Community Center at 4:30 p.m.
  • Abe Ovadia plays the Sounds Like Summer Music Series at the Edgartown Public Library on Tuesday, August 1 at 6:30 p.m.
