Family Time

June 22, 2023
June has been a busy month on the Vineyard; it’s hard to believe we’re heading into the last week. Before another wave of celebration begins on July 4th, why not take a bit of a breather this weekend and do something low-key that you love?
Grab an hour at the Vineyard Antique and Flea at the Grange Hall on Friday, June 23 between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. If you’re a fan of George Harrison, The Grateful Dead, Eric Clapton or Donna Summer, check out the films at the Filmusic Festival starting tonight, Thursday, June 22 and going through Sunday, June 25 at the Martha’s Vineyard Film Center.
Stop by the grand opening of Mariner Gallery, the newest art gallery in Edgartown or take in one of many other art exhibits around the Island. Or for something different, take the kids to Tisbury Family Shellfishing Dayat the Lagoon Pond boat launch on Saturday at 9 a.m.
Read on for more of our picks, and visit The Complete Martha’s Vineyard Calendar for a regularly updated list of events and happenings.
On Thursday, June 22, join the artists of the Workshop Gallery in Vineyard Haven for a reception to launch their latest exhibit, In Our Heads. Artists Althea Freeman-Miller, Ray Ewing, Kate Lizotte, Elysha Roberts and Wil Sideman will be on hand from 4 to 8 p.m.
Singer-songwriter Sally Taylor and YouthINK founder Christy Cashman will be at the Harbor View Hotel in Edgartown on Friday, June 23 to talk about their love of horses and Christy’s new book. The Truth About Horses is a free event beginning at 4 p.m.; RSVPs are encouraged and light bites and cocktails will be served.
Celebrate the Brazilian harvest festival of Junina! On Saturday, June 24, the FARM Institute and Slough Farm will offer folk dancing, children’s activities, fun with farm animals and snacks made by Sweet Bites. This free event takes place from 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. at the FARM Institute in Katama.
Lace up your running shoes: the 2023 Chappy Point to Point is happening this Sunday, June 25 starting at 8:30 a.m. The proceeds this year will support the Edgartown Village Market, a new farmers’ and makers’ market that launches at the Dr. Daniel Fisher House on Tuesday, June 27.
If you love animals, you’ll want to support the Animal Shelter of Martha’s Vineyard annual fundraiser on Monday, June 26. The Garden Party features live and online auctions, a ticket table, jewelry table and fabulous views of Edgartown harbor from the back yard of The Daggett House on North Water street. The event will be held from 5:30 to 8 p.m. Advance reservations strongly suggested.
