Art in Bloom

Art in Bloom

May 11, 2023
Art, film, dance, books – one of the best things about living on the Vineyard is access to the work of talented makers and artists who call this Island home, whether year-round or seasonally. Friday night, the work of two seasonal residents, Michael J. Fox and Davis Guggenheim, is on the big screen at the MV Film Center. Still: A Michael J. Fox Movie incorporates documentary, archival and scripted elements to recount Fox’s extraordinary story in his own words — the improbable tale of an undersized kid from a Canadian army base who rose to the heights of stardom in 1980s Hollywood.
On Saturday, experience three-dimensional art with a walk In Chilmark on the Island Folk Pottery Sculpture Trail, the magical work of Island artists Bill O’Callaghan and Heather Goff. After that, head up to Aquinnah (be sure to bring mom), to peruse Joan LeLacheur’s ocean jewelry for women – and men — at her artist’s open studio. And be sure to stop in to see the Seaweed Art Show at the Seaweed Art Gallery while you’re in Aquinnah.
There’s much more to see, hear and do in the next few days, both up-Island and down-Island. Check out our highlights below and then discover much more on The Complete Martha’s Vineyard Calendar.
Head to the Vineyard Gazette’s Edgartown office on Friday, May 12 to meet editor Bill Eville and get a signed copy of his new book, Washed Ashore: Family, Fatherhood, and Finding Home on Martha’s Vineyard, a poignant memoir written as a series of linked essays. Bill will read from Washed Ashore, which will be available for purchase at the event from Bunch of Grapes bookstore.
The event begins at 5:30 p.m. and runs to 7 p.m. Drinks and snacks will be served.
The Martha’s Vineyard Museum is opening its new exhibit, The Lost Bird Project, with a weekend of events. The program kicks off on Friday at 5 p.m. with a preview of Todd McGrain’s large-scale sculptures of extinct birds and a screening of a documentary about his process and project. A free, family-friendly sculpture tour and craft session will be held on Saturday, May 13 from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m. at the museum. The exhibit officially opens that same day.
On Saturday, May 13, Martha’s Vineyard Made celebrates its new season and a new roster of artists and makers with a show at its shop location in Vineyard Haven. At Sip, Snack and Shop, you can do all three of those things— plus meet the artists and enjoy shrubs and spreads from Blake Hill Preserves. The event will be held from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at 29 Main street.
If it’s spring and Mother’s Day weekend, then it’s also time for the Minnesingers’ annual spring concert. The Time of Our Lives celebrates 55 years of joyous song and dance from the beloved chorus of Martha’s Vineyard Regional High School performers. Two performances will be held: Friday, May 13 at 7 p.m. and 4 p.m. on Saturday, May 14, both at the Martha’s Vineyard Performing Arts Center at the high school.
Another spring tradition blooms on Sunday, May 14 at 4 p.m.: Featherstone Center for the Arts opens its annual exhibit The Art of Flowers. The artwork will be on display through May 29.
During the first weekend in June, Felix Neck Wildlife Sanctuary and QueerHub MV will be presenting special nature-inspired drag events to celebrate Pride Weekend. On Tuesday, May 16 at 6:30 p.m., they’re partnering with the West Tisbury Public Library on a conversation that’s sure to inspire your drag costume. Join artists Eli Nixon and Hana van der Kolk for Nature Inspired Drag, a conversation and drag performance.
