Now that horse pastures and hay fields are greening up and the fanciful chartreuse florets of Norway maples are unfurling across the Island, the misty mornings are pretty magical. There’s a feeling that you could be in Ireland or Scotland, only it’s Martha’s Vineyard – even better.
If Mother Nature is in charge of the morning show, Island artists and musicians are grabbing the evening spotlight this week. A mini-festival of performers at the Grange Hall, the Island Community Chorus spring concert, and a special music jam at the Strand are just a few of the highlights. For the full line-up of events and activities coming up, be sure to check The Complete Martha’s Vineyard Calendar for a regularly updated list of all Island activities.
Head to the Grange Hall Thursday, April 27 and Friday, April 28 for Locals, a new variety show of improv, music, dance and theatre that features Vineyard performers like you’ve never seen them before. The performances, presented by Circuit Arts, start at 7 p.m. each night and are offered on a pay what you can basis.
Twice a year, Islanders turn out to appreciate the talents of their neighbors who sing in the Island Community Chorus concerts at the Old Whaling Church in Edgartown. The spring concerts featuring works by Faure and Vaughan Williams will be held this Saturday, April 29 at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday, April 30 at 3 p.m.
The Chilmark potluck jam musicians will perform in a new location for the last gathering of the season! More than 15 musical acts are performing in the Strand Jam on Saturday, April 29 from 5 to 9 p.m. at the Strand Theatre in Oak Bluffs.
Native Earth Teaching Farm and the Milokan Cultural Center are celebrating May Day just a bit early. On Sunday, April 30, a family-friendly bonfire, music jam and dancing will be held at Native Earth in Chilmark. Bring a dish to share for potluck eating. The drumming starts at 2 p.m. and all other festivities get underway at 4 p.m.
Looking for some sparkle? Learn to make your own distinctive jewelry at an Earring Party held at Stefanie Wolf Designs in Oak Bluffs on Wednesday, May 3 at 5 p.m. Beads, refreshments and nibbles will be provided.
